What Are Raw Materials?

Raw material selection is a materials engineering decision compressed into a purchase order. Alloy, temper and form each change the mechanical properties substantially, and 6061-T6 aluminum behaves nothing like 3003-H14 despite both being sold as aluminum sheet.

ChatMRO indexes raw materials with alloy or polymer designation, temper or grade, dimensions and tolerance, finish and relevant mechanical properties held as structured attributes. That makes "304 stainless sheet, 16 gauge, 48 by 96, 2B finish" a complete specification the catalogue can match directly, not a starting point for a search.

Because material is bought by dimension, cut and tolerance matter as much commercially as they do technically. Standard sheet and bar sizes, available cut-to-size services and the tolerance held on each are surfaced with the product so the quote reflects exactly what will be delivered.

Raw Materials Questions, Answered

Can material be cut to size?

Many products are available cut to size. Give the finished dimensions in the RFQ and the cutting will be quoted with the material.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless?

316 contains molybdenum and resists chlorides far better, which matters in marine, washdown and chemical environments. 304 is adequate for general use and costs less.

Which plastic should I use for a wear strip?

UHMW for low friction and abrasion, nylon for strength and rigidity, acetal for dimensional stability in machining. Describe the application and ChatMRO recommends.

Do you supply material certificates?

Yes, where required. Note the certification standard in the RFQ and mill certificates will be supplied with the material.

Can I order offcuts or small quantities?

Yes. Materials are available from small pieces through to full sheets and bars, with price breaks as quantity increases.
