What Is Plumbing?

Plumbing is a category where a part that threads together isn't necessarily a part that's legal or safe to install. Material has to suit the fluid, pressure rating has to suit the system, and anything on a potable water line has to carry the appropriate approval regardless of how well it performs mechanically.

ChatMRO indexes plumbing products with nominal size, material, connection type, pressure and temperature rating and regulatory approval held as structured attributes. That makes "2 inch full-port 316 stainless ball valve, threaded, 1000 WOG" a query with an exact answer rather than a category to browse.

Connection standards are the recurring trap. NPT, BSP, compression, press, solder, groove and PEX are not interchangeable, and neither are the tools and consumables that go with them, so ChatMRO carries connection type explicitly and quotes only the fittings that actually mate.

SpecWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
Nominal SizeThe standard pipe or fitting size designationDetermines physical fit with the existing pipe run
MaterialPVC, copper, brass, stainless steel or cast ironMust be compatible with the fluid, pressure and any potable water requirements
Connection TypeNPT, BSP, compression, press, solder, groove or PEXThese standards are not interchangeable, and using the wrong one prevents a proper seal
Pressure RatingThe maximum working pressure the component is rated to hold, e.g. WOGMust meet or exceed the system's operating pressure with margin
ApprovalsRegulatory certifications required for the application, e.g. potable water approvalRequired by code for certain applications regardless of mechanical performance

Applications

Where Plumbing Get Used

The same component behaves differently by sector, because the duty cycle, the environment and the paperwork all change.

Commercial building services

Heating, chilled water and domestic supply distribution, where valve selection splits cleanly between isolation and regulation duties and where grooved and press systems dominate large-bore installation for speed.

Food and beverage processing

Product lines built in polished stainless with hygienic joints, alongside a completely separate services network for utilities.

Healthcare and laboratories

High-hazard backflow protection on process and equipment connections, thermostatic control at outlets, and drainage systems selected for chemical resistance where laboratory discharge is involved.

Hotels and multi-occupancy buildings

Long hot water recirculation loops where velocity limits and dead legs govern both erosion and water quality, and where fixture service parts are bought as standardised kits because the same faucet appears hundreds of times.

Industrial process utilities

Compressed air, cooling water and chemical dosing lines where elastomer compatibility rather than body material decides service life.

Schools and public buildings

Flushometer valves and sensor fittings chosen for robustness and rebuildability under heavy intermittent use, with scald protection at accessible outlets and vandal-resistant trim where exposure warrants it.

Fire protection services

Grooved large-bore pipework, listed valves and backflow protection separating the fire main from the potable supply.

Site and utility maintenance

Buried service repair, pipe freezing and hot tapping, pressure reducing stations and the everyday work of isolating a live system.

FAQ

Plumbing Questions, Answered

Do you supply lead-free potable water valves?

Yes. Lead-free compliance and potable water approvals are indexed, so you can filter to compliant products for drinking water systems.

What is the difference between full port and standard port?

A full port valve has a bore equal to the pipe, so flow is essentially unrestricted. Standard port is smaller, cheaper and creates measurable pressure drop.

Can you identify a fitting from a photo description?

Describe the connection — thread form, sealing face, size across flats — and ChatMRO narrows to the standard and returns matching fittings.

Do you supply repair and rebuild kits?

Yes. Rebuild kits for commercial flush valves, faucets and pressure reducing valves are indexed against the fixtures they service.

Can you quote a full pipe run?

Yes. List pipe, fittings, valves and supports in one request and it will be quoted as a package with compatibility checked.
