Technical Foundation

What Is Hardware?

Hardware is where load rating and environment quietly decide everything. A caster chosen on wheel diameter alone may be rated for a fraction of the trolley weight, and a zinc-plated hinge on a washdown line will be rusting within months.

ChatMRO indexes hardware with load capacity, dimensions, material and finish, mounting pattern and operating environment held as structured attributes. That means "6 inch swivel caster with brake, 300 kg per wheel, non-marking tread" comes back as a genuine shortlist rather than every caster near that diameter.

For load-bearing items the derating rules matter as much as the headline figure. Caster capacity assumes even distribution across four wheels and a smooth floor; rigging capacity depends on sling angle. ChatMRO surfaces those qualifications rather than quoting a maximum figure in isolation, so the number on the quote is the number that actually applies to the installation.

SpecWhat It MeansWhy It Matters
Load CapacityThe rated working load for the itemOften qualified by conditions — even distribution, floor type, sling angle — not a flat number
Material & FinishBase material and surface treatment or platingDetermines corrosion resistance and suitability for washdown or outdoor environments
Mounting PatternThe bolt pattern, stem or plate configuration for installationA part can meet every other spec and still not physically mount without a matching pattern
Wheel TreadThe tread material and profile for casters and wheelsGoverns floor protection, noise and rolling resistance for the specific floor surface
Working Load LimitThe maximum rated load for rigging and lifting hardwareDepends on sling angle and configuration, not just the component's standalone rating

Applications

Where Hardware Get Used

The same component behaves differently by sector, because the duty cycle, the environment and the paperwork all change.

Material handling & intralogistics

Trolleys, carts and dollies where caster capacity is sized on three of four wheels carrying the load, tread is chosen against the floor finish, and roll resistance decides whether an operator can move the unit at all over a full shift.

Food & beverage processing

Washdown throughout, which means 316 stainless where chlorides are present, sealed bearings, and hardware with open profiles that do not trap water and soil.

Machine building & enclosures

Access hardware chosen for vibration resistance, with compression latches maintaining gasket load so the enclosure keeps its ingress rating, plus hinges matched on mounting pattern so a replacement does not require drilling a sealed face.

Lifting & rigging operations

Chain, slings, shackles and hooks treated as a rated system where the weakest component sets the capacity, with sling angle explicitly accounted for and inspection criteria applied to remove worn or deformed items from service.

Healthcare & laboratory equipment

Quiet, non-marking treads and precision swivel bearings on mobile equipment, plus total-lock brakes that arrest both wheel and swivel so a trolley cannot creep once positioned.

Commercial furniture & fit-out

Concealed hinges, gas struts sized against panel weight and mounting geometry, and levelling feet with sufficient pad area to avoid indenting finished floors over time.

Heavy equipment & off-highway

High-capacity phenolic or cast iron wheels, hot-dip galvanised or stainless fittings for outdoor exposure, and gas struts specified with the temperature-related force loss in mind for cold-weather operation.

Plant machinery installation

Anti-vibration mounts loaded into their intended deflection range rather than oversized, with damping chosen for machines that pass through resonance frequently on start-up and coast-down.

FAQ

Hardware Questions, Answered

How do I size casters for a trolley?

Give the total loaded weight and the number of casters and ChatMRO calculates the per-wheel requirement with a safety margin, then shows matching units by tread and mounting.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless?

316 contains molybdenum, which greatly improves resistance to chlorides — washdown, coastal and chemical environments. 304 is adequate for general indoor corrosion resistance.

Can you match a gas strut from an old one?

Yes. Give the extended length, stroke, and end fitting type, plus the weight of the panel it lifts, and ChatMRO calculates the required force and matches a strut.

Do you supply rigging with test certificates?

Yes. Where lifting equipment requires certification, note it in the RFQ and the certificate is supplied with the item.

Can I order small quantities of hardware?

Yes. Hardware is available in single units through to bulk packs, with price breaks applied automatically as quantity increases.
