What Are Bearings?
Bearing numbering is one of the few genuinely standardised systems in industrial supply, which makes cross-referencing possible — and also makes it dangerously easy to order something that fits dimensionally but fails in service. A 6205 from four manufacturers shares a 25 mm bore, a 52 mm outside diameter and a 15 mm width, yet differs in seal type, internal clearance, cage material and precision class.
ChatMRO indexes more than 752,000 bearings with those attributes held as structured data. You can search on the number you have — "equivalent for a Timken 6205-2RS" — or on the three dimensions when the number has worn off the race, and get back a shortlist with the differences that matter called out rather than a page of near-misses. Internal clearance and cage material rarely appear on a drawing, but they are exactly what separates a bearing that survives a high-speed, high-vibration application from one that fails early in the same housing.
For mounted units the housing matters as much as the insert. ChatMRO holds bolt pattern, shaft size, locking method and housing material together, so a pillow block specified for a washdown line comes back stainless with the right seal, not the standard cast-iron equivalent.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bore, OD & Width | The three core dimensions stamped on every bearing | The starting filter, but matching dimensions alone does not guarantee correct fit |
| Bearing Type | Ball, roller, angular contact, needle or thrust | Determines the load direction and speed the bearing is actually rated for |
| Seals & Shields | Open, shielded (Z) or sealed (RS/2RS) construction | Governs contamination resistance versus friction and top running speed |
| Internal Clearance | The radial play built into the bearing before mounting | Wrong clearance causes premature failure under thermal expansion or preload |
| Precision Class | ABEC / ISO tolerance grade for runout and dimensional accuracy | Higher classes are required for high-speed spindles and precision machinery |

Applications
Where Bearings Get Used
The same component behaves differently by sector, because the duty cycle, the environment and the paperwork all change.
Electric motors & fans
High-speed, moderate-load duty dominated by deep groove ball bearings, normally sealed and grease-filled for life with C3 clearance to absorb the interference fit and running heat.
Conveyors & bulk handling
Long shafts and fabricated frames mean alignment is never perfect, so mounted spherical roller and self-aligning insert units are standard.
Food, beverage & pharmaceutical
Frequent caustic washdown rules out grey iron housings and mineral grease.
Machine tool spindles
Precision class, runout and preload govern everything.
Agriculture & off-highway
Shock load, dirt, water and long idle periods between seasons.
Pumps & compressors
Combined radial and thrust load with continuous running, typically handled by a deep groove or angular contact bearing at the thrust end and a cylindrical roller at the floating end so the shaft can grow thermally without preloading itself.
Mining, quarrying & aggregates
Very high radial load with structural deflection and heavy contamination, which is the classic case for spherical roller bearings on adapter sleeves, with labyrinth or taconite seals and scheduled re-greasing.
Wheels, hubs & transport
Opposed pairs of tapered roller bearings set to a specified endplay or preload, where the setting procedure is as much a part of the specification as the bearing number.

FAQ
Bearings Questions, Answered
Can you cross-reference a bearing between SKF, Timken and NSK?
Yes, and this is the most common bearing request. Give ChatMRO the number you currently buy and it returns equivalents across manufacturers, flagging any difference in seal type, clearance or cage that would affect service life.
I only have the dimensions, not a part number. Can you still find it?
Yes. Give bore, outside diameter and width, plus whatever you know about the application, and ChatMRO narrows to the matching family, then asks only what it needs to confirm seal and clearance.
What is the difference between 2RS and ZZ?
2RS is a contact rubber seal on both sides, which excludes contamination and retains grease but adds friction. ZZ is a metal shield, which runs faster and cooler but keeps less out. Describe the environment and ChatMRO recommends between them.
Do you stock food-grade and washdown bearings?
Yes. Stainless and thermoplastic housings with H1 lubricant and appropriate sealing are indexed as a distinct group, so you can filter to washdown-suitable units rather than checking each one.
Can I order a full mounted unit rather than just the insert?
Yes. Specify shaft size, housing style and material and ChatMRO quotes the complete unit, or the insert alone if you are reusing the housing.
