What Is Lighting?
Lighting is bought on wattage out of habit and specified on lumens in practice. Since LED replaced discharge sources, the wattage of the old fixture tells you almost nothing about what will replace it, while mounting height, beam angle and required lux at the work surface tell you everything.
ChatMRO indexes lighting with lumen output, efficacy, colour temperature, colour rendering, beam angle, dimming protocol, ingress rating and hazardous area classification held as attributes. "4 foot LED high bay, 5000 K, 0-10 V dimmable, IP65" is therefore a complete specification rather than a wattage guess. Colour rendering index is often overlooked but decides whether a warehouse fixture is adequate for a quality-inspection area right next to it.
Hazardous area lighting is a separate discipline within the category. Class and division or zone classification, temperature class and enclosure construction are indexed explicitly, because a fixture that is merely weatherproof is not a substitute for one that is certified for a flammable atmosphere.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lumen Output | The total light output of the fixture | The real basis for replacement, not the wattage of the fixture being replaced |
| Efficacy | Lumens produced per watt consumed | Determines running cost and heat output for the same light level |
| Colour Temperature | The warmth or coolness of the light, in Kelvin | Mismatched colour temperature across one space reads as an obvious, cheap-looking fix |
| Beam Angle | How tightly or widely the fixture distributes light | Wrong beam angle creates hot spots and dark gaps regardless of total lumen output |
| Ingress Protection | The IP rating for dust and moisture resistance | Required for wet, dusty or outdoor locations — a standard fixture will fail early there |

Applications
Where Lighting Get Used
The same component behaves differently by sector, because the duty cycle, the environment and the paperwork all change.
Warehousing & distribution
High mounting heights, narrow aisles and long operating hours, which favours high-bay fixtures with aisle-appropriate beam distribution rather than wide symmetric optics.
Manufacturing & assembly
Higher illuminance targets and tighter uniformity than storage space, with glare control mattering wherever operators look upward or work with polished surfaces.
Food processing & cold storage
Washdown areas need enclosures rated against high-pressure jetting specifically, plus shatter containment over open product lines.
Oil, gas & chemical plant
Classified areas require fixtures certified for the class and division or zone, matched to the gas group and temperature class of the substance present.
Workshops & maintenance bays
Neutral to cool colour temperature with high colour rendering, because fault-finding on wiring and finish inspection both depend on colour discrimination.
Car parks, yards & external areas
Area and street optics designed to put light on the surface rather than into the sky or neighbouring property, with attention to light trespass and uplight.
Offices & commercial interiors
Recessed troffers and panels selected on glare control as much as output, because most of the task is screen-based.
Egress routes & life safety
Emergency luminaires and exit signage specified on battery duration, coverage of the escape path and testing regime.

FAQ
Lighting Questions, Answered
How do I replace a metal halide fixture with LED?
Do not match wattage. Give ChatMRO the existing fixture, the mounting height and the area covered, and it recommends an LED fixture on lumen output and beam angle.
Do you supply hazardous area lighting?
Yes, indexed by class, division or zone and temperature class. Describe the classified area and ChatMRO filters to certified fixtures.
Which colour temperature should I choose?
4000 K is the usual neutral choice for general industrial space; 5000 K and above suits inspection and detail work. Describe the task and ChatMRO recommends.
Are your LED tubes ballast bypass or plug and play?
Both types are indexed as distinct products, because they are wired differently. Tell ChatMRO whether the ballast is being removed and it returns the correct type.
Can you quote a full retrofit?
Yes. List the fixture counts by area in one RFQ and the procurement desk will quote the project, including controls and emergency fittings.
