What Is a Weatherproof Boxe?
A weatherproof box is an electrical enclosure rated under NEMA standards to protect its contents (wiring, receptacles, controls) from outdoor exposure or washdown conditions. NEMA 3R rates protection against rain, sleet and falling dirt for general outdoor use; NEMA 4 adds protection against hose-directed water for washdown areas; NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance on top of NEMA 4's water protection, required in corrosive or wet industrial and coastal environments.
Material selection follows the environment: painted or galvanized steel suits general outdoor use where cost matters; stainless steel or fiberglass suits corrosive, coastal or heavy washdown environments where NEMA 4X corrosion resistance needs to be structural, not just a coating. Box sizing must account for wire fill and device clearance per NEC Article 314, not just the physical footprint of the devices being mounted.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| NEMA Rating | 3R, 4, 4X (increasing water/corrosion protection) | Must match the exposure — rain-only (3R) vs. washdown (4) vs. corrosive washdown (4X) |
| Material | Painted steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, fiberglass/polycarbonate | Stainless/fiberglass needed where NEMA 4X corrosion resistance must be inherent, not coated |
| Mounting Style | Surface mount, panel mount, pole/post mount | Must match available mounting surface and installation access |
| Box Sizing | Interior volume per NEC Article 314 wire fill rules | Undersized boxes violate fill requirements even if devices physically fit |
| Cover/Door Type | Hinged door, screw cover, in-use (while-in-use) cover | In-use covers keep receptacles weatherproof even with a cord plugged in, per NEC 406.9 |

FAQ
Weatherproof Boxes Questions, Answered
What's the practical difference between NEMA 3R, 4 and 4X?
NEMA 3R protects against rain, sleet and falling dirt — suitable for general outdoor use not subject to direct water jets. NEMA 4 adds protection against water directed by a hose, suited to washdown areas. NEMA 4X provides the same water protection as NEMA 4 plus additional corrosion resistance, required where the enclosure itself (not just its contents) would otherwise corrode from chemical or salt exposure.
Does a NEMA 4X rating mean the box is automatically stainless steel?
No — NEMA 4X can be achieved with stainless steel, fiberglass, or certain coated/painted metals, as long as the assembly passes the standard's corrosion resistance testing. However, in genuinely corrosive or coastal environments, inherently corrosion-resistant materials like 316 stainless steel or fiberglass are generally preferred over painted steel, since a scratched or damaged coating on painted steel can allow corrosion to start even if the box was originally NEMA 4X rated.
What is an 'in-use' cover and when is it required?
An in-use (or 'while-in-use') cover is a weatherproof cover designed to keep an outdoor receptacle protected from rain even with a cord plugged in and the cover closed around it — required by NEC 406.9 for outdoor receptacles in wet locations. A standard weatherproof cover that only seals when nothing is plugged in doesn't meet this requirement.
How do I size a weatherproof box correctly for the devices going inside?
Box sizing must satisfy NEC Article 314 wire fill and device fill volume requirements, which account for conductor count and size, device yokes, and any internal clamps or fittings — not just whether the devices physically fit inside the shell. An undersized box is a code violation even if everything appears to fit, so calculate required cubic inch capacity based on actual wire and device count.
Can I mount a NEMA 3R box in a washdown area instead of NEMA 4?
No — NEMA 3R is only rated for rain, sleet and falling dirt, not for the higher-pressure, directed water exposure of a washdown hose. Using a 3R-rated box in a washdown environment risks water intrusion that the enclosure wasn't tested or rated to withstand, even though it would perform fine in ordinary outdoor rain exposure.
