What Is a Battery Cable?
Battery cable is a heavy-gauge, flexible, fine-strand copper conductor insulated for high-amperage DC power transmission between batteries, starters, alternators, inverters and welding equipment. The fine stranding — hundreds of individual copper strands rather than the coarser stranding of general building wire — keeps the cable flexible enough to route through tight engine bays and equipment compartments despite its large cross-section.
Gauge (AWG) is sized to the current draw and run length together, not current alone: a longer run needs a heavier gauge than a short one carrying the same amperage to keep voltage drop within an acceptable range. Marine and corrosion-prone environments call for tinned copper conductors, which resist oxidation and salt-air corrosion far better than bare copper beneath the insulation jacket.

How do I size battery cable for my amperage and run length?
Both current draw and total cable length (there-and-back) matter — a longer run needs a heavier gauge than a short one at the same amperage to stay within an acceptable voltage drop, typically under 3%. Reference an ampacity and voltage-drop chart for the specific gauge, insulation rating and length combination rather than sizing on amperage alone.
What's the difference between welding cable and standard automotive battery cable?
Welding cable uses an even finer copper stranding than typical automotive battery cable, giving it superior flexibility and resistance to work-hardening under constant flexing and vibration — the reason it's also popular for high-current automotive and marine applications where a cable will be routed through tight bends repeatedly.
Why choose tinned copper battery cable over bare copper?
Tinned copper conductors have a thin tin coating over each strand that resists oxidation and corrosion far better than bare copper, especially in marine, coastal or high-humidity environments. The tinning also improves solder and crimp connection longevity over time compared to bare copper exposed to moisture.
Can I use welding cable in place of standard battery cable?
Yes — welding cable's finer stranding makes it a common, often superior substitute for standard battery cable in automotive and marine 12V/24V DC applications, provided the insulation is rated for the application's temperature and abrasion exposure. It's not rated for AC mains wiring, however.
What size lugs and terminals should I use with battery cable?
Lugs and terminals must be sized to match the cable's exact AWG gauge — an undersized barrel won't accept the full strand bundle, and an oversized one won't crimp down tightly enough for a low-resistance connection. Use a proper hydraulic or ratcheting crimp tool rated for the lug size rather than pliers.
