What Is a Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL)?
Compact fluorescent lamps come in two fundamentally different base configurations: screw-base (medium E26/E27) CFLs contain an integrated ballast and are designed as a direct retrofit for a standard incandescent socket, while pin-base CFLs have no integrated ballast and are designed to plug into a fixture-specific socket that houses a separate ballast — these two types are not interchangeable, and a pin-base lamp will not function or fit in a screw-base fixture.
Pin-base lamps are further distinguished by pin configuration and tube arrangement (twin-tube 2-pin, quad-tube 4-pin), and the fixture's ballast must be compatible with the lamp's wattage and pin type; a mismatch means the lamp either won't start or will be driven outside its designed operating parameters. Because CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, most jurisdictions regulate their disposal separately from ordinary trash, requiring recycling through designated collection programs.

Can I put a pin-base CFL into a screw-base fixture, or vice versa?
No. Screw-base CFLs have an integrated ballast built into the base and are designed to work with a standard incandescent screw socket. Pin-base CFLs have no ballast built in and require a fixture with a matching pin socket and a compatible separate ballast. The two base types are physically and electrically incompatible with each other's fixtures.
How do I know what wattage CFL my fixture needs?
For pin-base fixtures, the ballast is rated for a specific lamp wattage and pin configuration, which should be printed on the ballast label or the fixture's original specification — installing a mismatched wattage lamp on a pin-base ballast can cause poor performance or lamp failure. For screw-base fixtures, wattage is more flexible within the fixture's rated maximum, similar to choosing an incandescent bulb wattage.
What does color temperature mean, and which should I choose?
Color temperature, measured in Kelvin, describes how warm (yellowish, around 2700K) or cool (bluish-white, around 5000K+) the light appears. Lower Kelvin values suit residential and hospitality spaces for a warm, relaxed feel; higher Kelvin values suit task-oriented commercial and industrial spaces where visual clarity is prioritized. Match new lamps to the color temperature of existing fixtures in the same space for visual consistency.
Why can't I just throw a burned-out CFL in the regular trash?
CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, and many jurisdictions regulate their disposal to prevent mercury from entering landfills and groundwater. Check local regulations — many hardware stores, home improvement retailers, and municipal collection programs accept CFLs for proper recycling at no cost.
Are CFLs being phased out in favor of LED lighting?
Many facilities are transitioning to LED for greater efficiency and longer lamp life, and CFL manufacturing has declined industry-wide as LED costs have fallen. That said, CFLs remain available and are still specified to relamp existing pin-base fixtures where a full LED fixture retrofit isn't yet budgeted, making them an active MRO replacement category for now.
