What Is a Left Hand Insert?
A left-hand indexable insert is designed for a tool holder oriented to cut with the spindle rotating in the opposite sense from a conventional right-hand setup — used for back-facing operations, sub-spindle turning on multi-axis lathes, or approaching a feature from the opposite direction a standard right-hand tool would require. The insert's geometry (chip breaker, cutting edge orientation) is mirrored relative to its right-hand counterpart, so the two are not interchangeable even when the ISO shape code and grade match.
Insert selection follows the same ISO coding system as right-hand inserts (shape, clearance angle, tolerance, chip-breaker style) with hand orientation as an additional required parameter — ordering the wrong hand for a given tool holder results in the insert cutting from the wrong side or not seating in the holder's pocket at all. Carbide grade and coating are chosen based on the workpiece material exactly as with right-hand inserts.
