A DIN rail mounted surge protection device (SPD) is a modular unit that clips directly onto the standard 35mm DIN rail already inside a distribution panel or control cabinet — the same rail used for circuit breakers, contactors, and terminal blocks. Internally, metal oxide varistor (MOV) or gas discharge tube (GDT) elements divert transient overvoltage and current spikes to ground before they reach downstream equipment, then reset to a high-impedance state once the surge passes.
Electricians, panel builders, and facilities engineers rely on DIN rail SPDs wherever electrical panels or control cabinets need protection from lightning-induced surges, switching transients, or motor-generated overvoltage. Their standardized 35mm mounting format, tool-free installation alongside existing breakers, and visual status indicators (typically green/red) make them the standard surge protection format over separately enclosed or wall-mounted units in nearly all IEC-compliant electrical installations.
Common classification per UL 1449 / IEC 61643-11: Type 1 (service entrance, connected between the transformer secondary and the service disconnect), Type 2 (load side of the service disconnect, protecting general distribution), and Type 3 (point-of-utilization, typically at least 10 meters of conductor from the service entrance). Common ratings span roughly 10 kA to 160 kA discharge current, with voltage options covering 120V through 600V AC and up to 1500VDC for solar/PV applications.
