A straight centrifugal pump is an electric-driven centrifugal pump that moves liquid by spinning an impeller inside a volute. The AMT, Pentair Sta-Rite, and Goulds models in this class are standard centrifugals rather than self-priming pumps: AMT states they are not self-priming and require flooded suction, meaning the liquid source must sit above the pump inlet. High flow versions trade pressure for volume, with listed maximums running from about 94 GPM on stainless high-volume models to 330 GPM on heavy-duty cast iron models and up to 1,000 GPM on larger frame-mounted units.
These pumps are applied to liquid transfer, circulation, heating and cooling loops, pressure boosting, sprinkler and fire protection systems, chemical processing, and dirty water service, depending on the model. AMT's heavy-duty cast iron pumps list booster service, chemical transfer, recirculation, and heating and cooling, while its stainless steel high-volume pumps are described as continuous-duty, chemical and solid handling pumps compatible with a wide range of non-flammable liquids. Material choice (cast iron versus stainless steel) and seal choice follow the liquid being pumped.
Common configuration across the class: 1/2 HP to 25 HP electric motors, listed maximum flows from 42 GPM (AMT high head) through 94-130 GPM (AMT high volume stainless), 174-330 GPM (AMT heavy duty cast iron), up to 222 GPM (Sta-Rite CC series), and up to 1,000 GPM (Goulds GL15K-25). Ports run from 1-1/4" x 1" NPT up to 3" x 2" NPT, and to 6" x 4" flanged on the largest unit. Motors are offered in 115/230V single-phase and 230/460V three-phase, on NEMA 56J, 182JM, 184JM, and 215JM frames, typically at 3,450 RPM on AMT pumps. Listed temperature limits include 125°F for the Sta-Rite CC series and 212°F for the Goulds unit. Published GPM figures are maximums, so always check the pump curve for your duty point.
