A pressure reducing valve (PRV) is a spring-loaded, self-actuating valve that automatically reduces a higher, often fluctuating inlet pressure down to a stable, lower outlet pressure, using a diaphragm or piston that balances the outlet pressure against an adjustable spring force. Stainless steel construction — typically 303 or 316 stainless for wetted components — replaces the bronze or brass bodies common in standard water PRVs, giving the valve corrosion resistance suited to aggressive chemicals, steam, high-purity water, and sanitary process fluids.
Process engineers, plumbing contractors, and pharmaceutical/food-grade system designers rely on stainless steel PRVs wherever the reduced media is corrosive, high-temperature, or requires a sanitary-rated wetted surface — chemical processing, steam systems, pharmaceutical and food processing lines, and water systems needing corrosion resistance beyond what bronze can provide. Their construction in 316 stainless steel (or specialty alloys like Hastelloy, Monel, or titanium for extreme service) makes this valve class the standard choice wherever a bronze or brass PRV's corrosion resistance falls short of the application's chemical or purity requirements. A reducing valve is not a safety device, so over-pressure protection on the reduced side stays a separate fitting — a relief valve sized for the downstream volume.
Common configuration: 1/4" to 6" NPT threaded connections (flanged and sanitary tri-clamp options available), diaphragm or piston-type valve mechanisms, and a wide range of inlet/outlet pressure combinations — from low-pressure water service (150 psi inlet, 25-75 psi adjustable outlet) up to high-pressure industrial regulation (1,500 psi inlet, up to 450 psi outlet on piston-type models). Elastomeric diaphragm models are typically limited to lower pressure ranges, while metal-seated piston designs handle substantially higher inlet pressures.
