What Is a Swivel Joint?
A swivel joint (also called a rotary union) is a mechanical coupling that connects a stationary fluid supply line to a rotating component — a hose reel, crane boom, index table, or rotating drum — while allowing continuous 360-degree rotation without twisting, kinking or wearing through the connected hose. Internal rotating seals (commonly mechanical face seals or O-ring/lip seal stacks) maintain a pressure-tight barrier between the stationary housing and the rotating shaft while permitting free rotation under full system pressure.
Single-passage swivels carry one fluid circuit through the rotating joint, while multi-passage rotary unions stack multiple sealed passages coaxially, allowing several independent fluid or even electrical/signal circuits to pass through one rotating assembly — common on multi-function hydraulic equipment like cranes or reels needing both supply and return lines to rotate together. Pressure rating, seal material and media compatibility must all be matched to the specific fluid (hydraulic oil, compressed air, water, or process chemicals), since seal materials that work well with petroleum-based hydraulic fluid can fail rapidly in contact with certain process chemicals.

What's the difference between a single-passage swivel and a multi-passage rotary union?
A single-passage swivel carries one fluid circuit through the rotating connection. A multi-passage rotary union stacks multiple independent, sealed passages coaxially within one assembly, letting several fluid circuits (such as supply and return) or even signal/electrical circuits rotate together through a single unit — common on equipment needing multiple simultaneous rotating connections.
How do I select the right pressure rating for a swivel joint?
Choose a swivel rated above your system's maximum operating pressure including any transient pressure spikes, not just the steady-state operating pressure — hydraulic systems in particular can see momentary spikes well above normal operating pressure during valve shifts or load changes.
What seal material should I use for my application?
Seal material must be chemically compatible with the specific fluid passing through the joint — nitrile (Buna-N) suits most petroleum-based hydraulic fluids, Viton offers broader chemical resistance for harsher fluids or higher temperatures, and PTFE is used where extreme chemical inertness is required. Using the wrong seal material for the fluid leads to rapid degradation and leakage.
What causes a swivel joint to leak or fail prematurely?
Common causes include exceeding the rated pressure or RPM, using seal material incompatible with the fluid, contamination entering the rotating seal interface, or misalignment between the swivel and the equipment it's mounted to that puts uneven side-load on the rotating shaft.
Can swivel joints be used on pneumatic as well as hydraulic systems?
Yes — swivel joints are made in ratings suited to compressed air and other gas media as well as hydraulic fluid, but the pressure rating, seal material and port sizing should be selected specifically for the media and pressure range of the pneumatic system rather than reusing a hydraulic-rated unit without checking compatibility.
