What Is a Plug and Switch Lockout Device?
A lockout device physically prevents an energy-isolating device — a plug, circuit breaker, switch or pushbutton — from being reactivated while a padlock is applied, forming the physical control point required by OSHA's Control of Hazardous Energy standard (29 CFR 1910.147). A plug lockout encloses the male plug end so it cannot be reinserted into an outlet; a breaker lockout clips over a circuit breaker toggle to block it from being switched back on.
Device selection depends on matching the lockout to the specific equipment's energy-isolating point — a standard breaker lockout won't fit a multi-pole or unusually shaped breaker, and a switch lockout must match the physical dimensions of the wall plate or toggle it's covering. Each authorized employee applies their own padlock to the device, so most lockout devices accept a hasp allowing multiple padlocks for group lockout situations.
