What Is a Wood Drilling Bit?

What's the difference between a spade bit and a Forstner bit?
A spade bit is a flat, economical bit designed for fast, rough holes in framing and construction lumber, where the hole's edge finish doesn't matter. A Forstner bit uses a rim-and-spur design to cut a much cleaner, flat-bottomed hole — including holes that overlap or sit at the edge of a board — at a slower feed rate, and is the standard choice for visible or precision woodworking holes.
Why use a brad-point bit instead of a standard twist bit in wood?
A brad-point bit's center spur prevents the bit from wandering or walking at the start of the hole, and its two outer scoring spurs cut the wood fiber cleanly at the hole's edge to prevent tear-out — both problems that standard twist bits, ground for metal, are prone to in wood. Brad points are the standard for dowel holes and other precision-location drilling.
What bit should I use for deep holes through thick lumber?
Auger bits, with their deep single-flute spiral, are designed specifically for deep-hole drilling because the flute efficiently evacuates chips over a long bit length, preventing the binding and heat buildup that shorter-flute bits experience in deep holes. Extra-long spade and twist bits are also available for deep holes where auger-style chip evacuation isn't required.
Do I need a hex-shank bit for my drill?
Hex shanks are designed for quick-change chucks and resist slipping under the high torque loads generated by large-diameter spade and Forstner bits, particularly in impact drivers. Standard round-shank bits work fine in a keyed or keyless drill chuck at moderate torque but can slip under heavy load in higher-torque tools.
Can wood drilling bits be used on plywood or MDF without splintering the surface?
Brad-point and Forstner bits generally produce cleaner results on plywood and MDF than spade or standard twist bits, because their scoring edges cut the surface veneer or fiber before the bit body removes material. Backing the workpiece with sacrificial scrap and reducing feed rate near breakthrough further reduces exit-side splintering on any bit type.
