Technical Foundation

What Is a Fiberglass Grating?

Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) grating is a load-bearing walking or structural surface made of glass fiber roving embedded in a thermosetting resin matrix, manufactured either by molding (fibers cast into an open lattice) or pultruction (continuous fiber bars pulled through a resin bath and cured, then assembled into a panel). It's specified in place of steel or aluminum grating primarily for corrosion resistance — FRP does not rust, and the resin system can be selected to resist specific chemical exposures that would degrade metal.

Resin selection is the primary technical decision: isophthalic polyester resin is a general-purpose, cost-effective option; vinyl ester resin offers substantially better chemical and corrosion resistance for aggressive acid, caustic or solvent exposure; and phenolic resin is specified where low flame spread and low smoke generation are required, such as offshore platforms and enclosed industrial spaces. Load rating is governed by panel thickness, mesh pattern and support span, and must be verified against the actual span and point/uniform load — FRP grating deflects more than steel under equivalent load and is typically designed to a deflection limit, not just a break strength.

Applications

Where Fiberglass Grating Get Used

FRP grating is specified anywhere corrosive, wet or electrically sensitive conditions make steel or aluminum grating a poor long-term choice.

Chemical & Petrochemical Processing

Corrosion-resistant walkways and platforms over process areas exposed to acids, caustics and solvents that degrade steel grating.

Water & Wastewater Treatment

Grating decking over clarifiers, tanks and channels where constant moisture and chemical dosing rule out unprotected steel.

Offshore & Marine Platforms

Phenolic resin grating specified for its fire and smoke performance combined with saltwater corrosion resistance.

Food & Beverage Processing

Non-corroding, washdown-compatible grating for platforms and trench covers in wet processing environments.

Pulp & Paper Mills

FRP grating replacing steel in walkways exposed to bleaching chemicals and high-humidity process areas.

Power Generation & Cooling Towers

Lightweight, non-conductive grating for platforms around electrical equipment and corrosive cooling tower environments.

FAQ

Fiberglass Grating Questions, Answered

How do I choose between isophthalic, vinyl ester and phenolic resin?

Isophthalic polyester is the standard general-purpose choice for mild environments and is the most cost-effective. Vinyl ester should be specified where the grating will be exposed to more aggressive chemicals — stronger acids, caustics, solvents or higher temperatures — since it holds up significantly better than isophthalic over time. Phenolic resin is chosen specifically for its low flame spread and low smoke/toxicity performance, and is often required on offshore platforms and in enclosed or occupied industrial buildings by code or insurance requirements, independent of chemical exposure.

Is fiberglass grating as strong as steel grating?

For a given thickness, FRP grating typically has a lower strength-to-weight ratio in stiffness (it deflects more under load) than steel, so it's usually designed to a maximum allowable deflection (often span/60 or similar) rather than just an ultimate load, and panels may need a shorter support span or greater thickness than an equivalent steel panel to meet the same deflection limit. It is, however, significantly lighter per unit strength than steel and does not corrode, which is why it's chosen despite the different structural behavior.

What's the difference between molded and pultruded fiberglass grating?

Molded grating is manufactured by casting fiberglass roving into an open mold to form an integral lattice, producing a grating with roughly equal strength in both directions — useful where load direction is unpredictable. Pultruded grating is built from separate I-shaped fiberglass bars pulled continuously through a resin bath, then assembled into a panel with cross rods; it typically offers higher load capacity in the main bar direction for a given weight, making it efficient for known, directional load paths like straight walkways.

Does fiberglass grating need a grit-top surface?

Grit-top (an abrasive granule finish embedded in the resin) is recommended anywhere the surface may get wet, oily or icy, since smooth (meniscus-top) FRP grating can be slippery in those conditions. For dry, sheltered indoor applications, a meniscus-top surface is sometimes selected for easier cleaning, but most industrial walkway and platform specifications default to grit-top for slip resistance and OSHA walking-working surface compliance.

Can fiberglass grating be cut and drilled on site?

Yes — FRP grating can be field-cut with standard tools like a carbide-tipped circular saw, though cut edges should be sealed with resin to prevent fiber exposure and moisture wicking into the cut fibers, which can lead to premature degradation. Manufacturers typically supply resin sealant or edge-banding kits specifically for field modifications, and factory-cut panels with finished edges are preferred wherever the layout is known in advance.
