What Is a Metal Forming Machine?

A metal forming machine reshapes sheet or plate metal into a new profile through controlled plastic deformation — bending, rolling, or pressing — rather than removing material as a cutting process does. Press brakes clamp a workpiece between a punch and die to create precise straight bends at specified angles; slip rollers pass sheet between three rollers to form cylindrical curves and cones; box-and-pan brakes use interchangeable fingers to bend boxes and enclosures with multiple sides without the fingers interfering with already-formed sides.

Capacity is expressed as tonnage (the bending force available) combined with working length (the maximum width of material the machine can process) — both numbers must be checked together against the material's thickness and yield strength, since a machine may have ample tonnage for a short bend but insufficient tonnage to bend the same thickness across its full rated length. Press brake tooling (punch and die sets) is selected separately based on the bend angle, inside radius, and material thickness required, and is not universal across all brake brands without adapter tooling.

How do I determine what tonnage press brake I need?

Required tonnage depends on material thickness, tensile strength, and the length of the bend, calculated together — tonnage requirements scale roughly with material thickness squared and increase with tensile strength, and must be calculated per linear foot of bend length then multiplied by total bend length. Manufacturers publish tonnage charts by material and thickness; always size to your thickest, longest, highest-strength bend, not an average across your work.

What's the difference between a slip roll and a press brake?

A press brake creates sharp, straight-line bends by clamping material between a punch and die — suited to angular shapes like brackets and boxes. A slip roll passes material between three rotating rollers to create continuous curves and cylinders — suited to rolling cones, tubes and curved panels that a press brake's straight-line bending can't produce.

Why does press brake tooling need to match material thickness?

The V-die opening width and punch nose radius must be sized to the material thickness being bent — too narrow a V-opening for a given thickness concentrates stress and can crack the material at the bend, while too wide a V-opening produces a larger, less controlled bend radius than specified. Standard tooling charts pair V-die openings to material thickness ranges to get a clean bend at the intended angle.

What does a CNC backgauge add over a manual backgauge?

A manual backgauge requires the operator to physically measure and set stops for each bend position, which is workable for simple or low-volume parts. A CNC backgauge stores bend sequences and automatically repositions between bends, which matters for parts requiring multiple precise bends in sequence — it improves repeatability and throughput significantly on multi-bend production parts.

Can the same press brake bend both mild steel and stainless steel?

Yes, but tonnage requirements are higher for stainless steel than mild steel at the same thickness because stainless has higher tensile and yield strength, so a machine's rated capacity for mild steel does not carry over directly — check the manufacturer's tonnage chart for the specific material and thickness being bent before assuming a bend is within the machine's capacity.
