What Is a Static Shielding Bag?
A static shielding bag uses a multi-layer laminate — typically a metalized (usually aluminum) layer sandwiched between plastic films — to form a Faraday-cage-like enclosure that blocks external electrostatic fields from reaching an ESD-sensitive device inside, and prevents charge buildup on the bag's outer surface from discharging into the device. This differs from a simple 'anti-static' bag, which is only dissipative and does not shield against an external field the way a true shielding bag does.
Bags rated to ANSI/ESD S541 specify shielding performance, surface resistivity and mechanical properties. Moisture Barrier Bags (MBB) add a foil layer for moisture sensitivity level (MSL) protection on components like BGAs and other surface-mount devices sensitive to moisture absorption during storage — MBB and static shielding are related but distinct properties, and a bag rated for one is not automatically rated for the other.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Shielding Construction | Metal-in (foil laminated inside) vs. metal-out | Metal-out is more durable to flex-fatigue from repeated handling; metal-in resists puncture-induced pinholes |
| ANSI/ESD S541 Rating | Industry standard for ESD shielding bag performance | Confirms measured shielding effectiveness, not just marketing claims of 'anti-static' |
| Moisture Barrier (MBB) | Added foil layer for moisture sensitivity level (MSL) protection | Required for MSL-rated components like BGAs stored outside a dry cabinet |
| Closure Type | Zip-lock (reclosable), open-top (heat seal) | Zip-lock suits repeated access; heat-seal open-top suits one-time sealed shipment |
| Surface Resistivity | Static dissipative range per ESD standards | Ensures the bag safely bleeds off static charge rather than insulating it in place |

FAQ
Static Shielding Bags Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a static shielding bag and an anti-static bag?
An anti-static (dissipative) bag only slows charge buildup on its own surface and offers no protection against an external electrostatic field reaching the component inside. A true static shielding bag has a metalized layer that forms a Faraday-cage effect, actively blocking outside fields — this distinction matters for genuinely ESD-sensitive components.
What does 'metal-in' vs 'metal-out' construction mean?
Metal-in bags have the metalized shielding layer laminated on the inside of the bag, protected from abrasion but more vulnerable to shielding loss if the inner layer develops pinholes from sharp component edges. Metal-out bags have the shielding layer on the outside, generally more durable against repeated flexing and handling.
Do I need a moisture barrier bag, or just static shielding?
These are separate properties — check whether your component has a moisture sensitivity level (MSL) rating per J-STD-020; if so, it needs a moisture barrier bag (MBB) with desiccant and humidity indicator card, in addition to (or combined with) static shielding, not static shielding alone.
How do I know if a static shielding bag meets industry standards?
Look for a rating against ANSI/ESD S541, the standard covering shielding bag performance including shielding effectiveness and surface resistivity — a bag simply labeled 'anti-static' without a standards reference may not provide true shielding performance.
Can static shielding bags be reused?
Zip-lock reclosable bags can generally be reused for the same or similar components as long as the bag isn't punctured, torn or visibly degraded, since any breach compromises the shielding layer. Heat-sealed open-top bags are typically single-use once opened.
