What Is a Buna-N Roll?
Buna-N, also called nitrile or NBR (nitrile-butadiene rubber), is a synthetic elastomer prized for its strong resistance to petroleum oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids, which makes it the default gasket and sealing material choice anywhere those media are present — a role natural rubber can't fill since oils rapidly degrade it. It's supplied in roll form so fabricators can cut custom gaskets, liners and pads to size rather than being limited to pre-cut sheets, with roll width and length chosen to minimize seam count and waste on large or repeated cut patterns.
Durometer (hardness, Shore A scale) is specified alongside thickness because gasket sealing performance depends on both — a softer durometer conforms better to an uneven flange face at lower bolt torque, while a harder durometer resists extrusion under high clamping pressure or system pressure. Fabric reinforcement (typically a nylon or polyester scrim) is added to rolls intended for higher-pressure gasketing or where dimensional stability under stretch matters more than pure conformability.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 1/32in to 1in, commonly 1/16in-1/4in for gaskets | Thicker stock better fills uneven or damaged flange faces; thinner stock suits tight assemblies |
| Durometer (Shore A) | Typically 40A (soft) to 80A (firm) | Softer conforms better to uneven surfaces; firmer resists extrusion under high pressure |
| Roll Width | Common widths from 36in to 60in | Wider rolls reduce seams and waste on large gasket or liner cut patterns |
| Reinforcement | Plain vs. fabric (nylon/polyester) reinforced | Reinforced stock resists stretch and tearing under higher-pressure sealing applications |
| Grade/Certification | Commercial grade vs. food-grade (FDA compliant) | Food-grade required for gaskets in contact with food, beverage or pharmaceutical product |

Marine & Fuel Storage Applications
Nitrile sheet used in fuel tank and fuel line sealing applications requiring petroleum resistance.
FAQ
Buna-N Rolls Questions, Answered
Why choose Buna-N (nitrile) over other rubber types?
Buna-N offers strong resistance to petroleum oils, fuels and hydraulic fluids that would rapidly degrade natural rubber, EPDM or many other elastomers. It's the standard default for gasketing and sealing anywhere those fluids are present, though it has weaker resistance to ozone, weathering and some chemicals compared to EPDM or specialty compounds.
What thickness should I use for a gasket application?
Thinner stock (1/16in-1/8in) suits flat, well-machined flange faces in tight assemblies; thicker stock (1/4in or more) better compensates for an uneven or slightly damaged flange face. Also confirm the durometer — softer material conforms better at a given thickness than firmer material.
Do I need fabric-reinforced Buna-N?
Reinforced stock adds dimensional stability and tear resistance, and is generally specified for higher-pressure sealing applications or larger gaskets prone to stretching during installation. Plain (unreinforced) stock is adequate for lower-pressure, smaller gasket cuts.
Is standard Buna-N food safe?
Not automatically — standard commercial-grade nitrile rubber is not certified for food contact. Food-grade Buna-N rolls are specifically formulated and certified (FDA-compliant) for use in food, beverage or pharmaceutical equipment gasketing, and should be specified explicitly for those applications.
How do I choose the right durometer for my application?
Lower durometer (softer, e.g. 40-50A) conforms better to uneven or lower-clamping-force joints. Higher durometer (firmer, e.g. 70-80A) resists extrusion and deformation under high bolt torque or system pressure. Match durometer to both the flange condition and the operating pressure of the joint being sealed.
