Top-post batteries have terminals protruding vertically from the top of the case, connected via a clamp that closes around the tapered post — standard on most automotive and many industrial batteries. Side-post batteries instead have internally threaded terminals on the battery's side face, connected via a bolt-through terminal rather than a clamp-style connector; the two systems require entirely different terminal hardware and are not interchangeable without an adapter specifically designed to convert one style to the other.

Clamp material affects both conductivity and corrosion resistance: lead clamps are traditional and inexpensive but softer and more prone to corrosion buildup; brass and copper alloy clamps offer better conductivity and corrosion resistance, an upgrade often specified for marine and heavy-duty industrial applications where terminal corrosion causes ongoing maintenance issues.
