What Is a Sieve Accessorie?
Test sieve accessories support the mechanical sieving process defined in ASTM E11 and ISO 3310, where a stack of graduated sieves is agitated on a shaker to separate a particulate sample by particle size. Accessories must match the diameter of the sieve frames in use — 8 in. (203mm) and 12 in. (305mm) are the common US frame diameters, with 200mm and 300mm as the corresponding metric sizes — since a pan or lid sized for one frame diameter won't seal properly on another.
Receiver pans (which catch the finest fraction that passes all sieves) and lids (which prevent sample loss and contamination during shaking) should be selected in a material compatible with the sample — stainless steel for most general use, brass where its slight softness reduces particle degradation on some materials. Cleaning brushes must be soft enough not to distort or damage the sieve mesh wires, since a damaged mesh opening invalidates the sieve's calibrated accuracy and requires recertification or replacement.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Diameter | 8 in. / 200mm, 12 in. / 300mm, other sizes | Accessories must match the exact frame diameter of the sieves in use |
| Material | Stainless steel, brass | Affects durability, sample contamination risk, and mesh-friendliness during cleaning |
| Component Type | Pan, lid, shaker adapter, cleaning brush | Each plays a distinct role in the sieve stack assembly and maintenance routine |
| Shaker Compatibility | Adapter rings/clamps sized to specific shaker models | A shaker adapter must match both the sieve diameter and the shaker's clamping mechanism |
| Standard Compliance | ASTM E11, ISO 3310 dimensional compliance | Ensures accessories interface correctly with calibrated, standard-compliant sieves |

Pharmaceutical & Powder Testing
Sieve accessories supporting particle size distribution analysis of powders and granulated materials in QC labs.
Food Processing & Agriculture
Sieve stacks used to verify particle size specifications for flour, grain and processed food ingredients.
Soil & Geotechnical Testing
Sieve analysis accessories used in geotechnical labs for soil gradation testing per ASTM D422 and related standards.
Mining & Mineral Processing
Sieve stacks and shaker accessories used for ore and mineral particle size analysis in process quality control.

FAQ
Sieve Accessories Questions, Answered
Why do I need a matching pan and lid for my sieve stack?
The receiver pan sits at the bottom of the stack to catch the finest particle fraction that passes through every sieve, and the lid sits on top to prevent sample loss, dust escape and contamination during shaking — both must match the frame diameter of your sieves exactly to seal properly against the top and bottom sieves in the stack. A pan or lid from a different diameter sieve set typically won't seat correctly and can leak sample material.
Can any cleaning brush be used on a test sieve mesh?
No — sieve mesh wires, especially on finer sieves, can be distorted or damaged by an overly stiff brush, which changes the calibrated opening size and can invalidate the sieve's accuracy. Manufacturers offer brushes specifically designed with appropriately soft bristles (often brass or nylon) for sieve cleaning, and finer sieves generally need a softer brush than coarser ones — always match the brush to the sieve's mesh fineness rather than using a generic wire brush.
What's the difference between an 8 inch and 12 inch sieve accessory, and can they be mixed?
8 in. (203mm) and 12 in. (305mm) are the two common US frame diameters for test sieves, each requiring differently sized pans, lids and shaker adapters — they are not interchangeable, since an accessory sized for one diameter won't seal or clamp correctly on the other. When ordering, confirm your existing sieve frame diameter (often stamped on the frame) before selecting matching accessories.
Does my shaker adapter need to match the shaker model, or just the sieve diameter?
Both — the adapter or clamping assembly needs to match the sieve stack's diameter to physically fit the sieves, but it also needs to be compatible with your specific shaker model's clamping mechanism, since shaker manufacturers often use proprietary clamp or adapter designs. Check both the sieve diameter and the shaker brand/model when ordering replacement or additional adapters.
How do I know if my sieve mesh has been damaged and needs replacement rather than just cleaning?
Look for visibly bent, stretched or broken mesh wires, especially at points of frequent contact during loading or cleaning, and periodically verify sieve accuracy against a calibration/verification standard, since gradual mesh wear can occur without obvious visual damage. Sieves used for calibrated or certified testing typically require periodic recertification against ASTM E11 tolerances, and a sieve outside tolerance should be replaced rather than continued in use for compliance testing.
