What Is a ABS Pipe Fitting?
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a rigid black plastic used almost exclusively for drain, waste and vent (DWV) plumbing — it is not rated for pressurized water supply lines. Fittings join to pipe via solvent welding, where an ABS-specific cement chemically fuses the fitting and pipe surfaces into a single continuous piece, rather than mechanically sealing like a threaded or compression joint.
ABS is favored over PVC DWV in some regions and applications for its higher impact resistance in cold temperatures and simpler one-step solvent welding process (PVC requires a primer step). Fitting types follow standard DWV geometry — sweep and long-turn elbows minimize flow restriction and clog risk compared to sharp 90-degree turns, and wye/tee fittings are chosen based on whether the branch line carries drainage or vent air.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe Size | Typically 1-1/4 in. to 6 in. | Must match the pipe schedule and DWV code requirement for the fixture or drain run being served |
| Fitting Geometry | 90° elbow, sweep elbow, tee, wye | Sweep/long-turn fittings reduce clog risk versus sharp-turn fittings in drain lines |
| Joint Type | Solvent weld (hub) vs. threaded | Solvent weld gives a permanent, non-serviceable joint; threaded allows future disassembly (e.g. cleanouts) |
| Application Class | Drain, waste, vent (DWV) — non-pressure rated | ABS DWV fittings are not rated for pressurized water supply use, unlike Schedule 40 PVC pressure pipe |
| Code Compliance | ASTM D2661 / local plumbing code | Local plumbing codes vary on ABS vs. PVC DWV acceptance — confirm before specifying for a project |

Applications
Where ABS Pipe Fittings Get Used
ABS DWV fittings are specified anywhere a non-pressurized drain, waste or vent line needs a permanently solvent-welded plastic pipe system.
Residential Plumbing Rough-In
Drain, waste and vent piping for sinks, toilets and tubs in new residential construction.
Commercial Building Plumbing
DWV piping systems in commercial and multi-family construction where code permits ABS.
Plumbing Repair & Remodeling
Replacement and repair fittings for existing ABS drain lines during bathroom or kitchen remodels.
Manufactured & Modular Housing
Pre-fabricated DWV assemblies using ABS for factory-built housing plumbing systems.
Cold Climate Construction
ABS specified over PVC in some cold-region applications for its better low-temperature impact resistance.
Facilities Maintenance
Stocked cleanouts, couplings and elbows for ongoing drain line maintenance and repair.
FAQ
ABS Pipe Fittings Questions, Answered
Can ABS pipe be used for pressurized water supply lines?
No. ABS DWV (drain, waste, vent) fittings and pipe are rated for non-pressurized drainage and venting only, not for pressurized potable water supply. For pressurized applications, Schedule 40/80 PVC or CPVC pressure-rated pipe and fittings should be used instead.
Do I need primer to solvent weld ABS fittings?
No, ABS solvent welding is typically a one-step process using ABS-specific cement, unlike PVC which requires a purple primer step before cementing. This makes ABS joints somewhat faster to install, though proper cement application and joint make-up time are still critical for a leak-tight weld.
Can I connect ABS fittings directly to PVC pipe?
Direct solvent welding of ABS to PVC is not recommended because the two plastics have different chemical compositions and the solvent cement doesn't create a proper chemical bond between them. Use a mechanical transition coupling (rated for ABS-to-PVC transitions) or a rubber banded coupling instead.
What's the difference between a sweep elbow and a standard 90-degree elbow?
A sweep (long-turn) elbow has a larger turn radius that reduces flow restriction and lowers the risk of debris catching and clogging the line, compared to a standard short-turn 90-degree elbow. Plumbing codes often require sweep fittings on drain lines specifically to reduce clog risk, while standard elbows are more common on vent lines.
Is ABS or PVC better for DWV plumbing?
Both are code-accepted in most jurisdictions, though local codes vary and should be checked before specifying either. ABS offers better impact resistance in cold temperatures and simpler solvent welding (no primer needed), while PVC is more widely available in some regions and offers a slightly wider selection of specialty fittings.
