What Is a Thermocouple Assemblie?
A thermocouple assembly pairs a thermocouple sensing junction — two dissimilar metal wires joined at the measuring tip, generating a small voltage proportional to temperature — with a protective sheath, fitting and connection head suited to industrial installation. Calibration type (K, J, T, E, etc.) sets the wire metallurgy and usable temperature range: Type K (chromel-alumel) covers roughly -200°C to 1260°C and is the most common general-purpose choice, while Type J (iron-constantan) and Type T (copper-constantan) suit narrower or lower-temperature ranges with different atmosphere sensitivities.
Junction style affects both response time and electrical isolation: a grounded junction welds the thermocouple wires directly to the sheath tip for fast response but ties the signal to the sheath potential, an ungrounded junction insulates the junction from the sheath for electrical isolation at the cost of slightly slower response, and an exposed junction extends past the sheath tip for the fastest response in non-corrosive gas streams. Sheath material (304/316 stainless for general use, Inconel for high-temperature or corrosive service) must withstand both the process temperature and the surrounding chemical environment.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Calibration Type | K, J, T, E — sets wire metallurgy and temperature range | Must match the instrumentation/controller's configured input type and the process temp range |
| Junction Style | Grounded, ungrounded, exposed | Grounded = fastest response with sheath-tied signal; ungrounded = isolated; exposed = fastest but unprotected |
| Sheath Material | 304/316 stainless steel, Inconel 600 | Must resist both the process temperature and any corrosive/oxidizing atmosphere present |
| Sheath Diameter & Length | Common diameters 1/8 in.-3/8 in.; length sized to insertion depth | Determines mechanical strength and response time; too short misses the true process temperature |
| Connection Style | Screw terminal head, mini/standard connector, flying leads | Must match the transmitter, controller or wiring method used at the installation point |

FAQ
Thermocouple Assemblies Questions, Answered
What's the difference between Type K, J and T thermocouples?
Type K (chromel-alumel) is the most widely used general-purpose thermocouple, covering roughly -200°C to 1260°C with good accuracy and resistance to oxidizing atmospheres. Type J (iron-constantan) has a narrower range (about -40°C to 750°C) and is limited by the iron leg's susceptibility to oxidation at higher temperatures. Type T (copper-constantan) is preferred for low-temperature and cryogenic work and is highly stable at temperatures below 0°C.
Should I choose a grounded or ungrounded junction?
Grounded junctions weld the sensing junction directly to the sheath tip, giving faster response but electrically connecting the signal to the sheath — this can introduce ground loop noise in some installations. Ungrounded junctions isolate the junction from the sheath with a small insulating gap, sacrificing a bit of response speed for better electrical noise immunity, which is usually the safer default unless fast response is critical.
What sheath material do I need for high-temperature service?
304 and 316 stainless steel sheaths are suitable up to roughly 870°C (1600°F) depending on the specific grade and atmosphere. For higher temperatures or more aggressive oxidizing/reducing atmospheres, Inconel 600 sheaths extend usable service temperature significantly higher while resisting oxidation better than stainless at extreme temperatures.
Do I need a thermowell with my thermocouple assembly?
A thermowell is a separate protective tube installed in the process line that the thermocouple probe inserts into, allowing the sensor to be removed or replaced without draining or opening the process. It's strongly recommended for pressurized lines, corrosive media, or any installation where you'll need to service the sensor without shutting down the process.
How do I know what connection style to order?
Match the connection to your existing instrumentation: a screw terminal connection head suits direct field wiring to a panel or transmitter, a miniature or standard thermocouple connector suits quick-disconnect applications with mating plugs, and flying leads (bare wire ends) suit direct hard-wiring into a control cabinet. Confirm compatibility with whatever transmitter or controller the assembly will feed.
