What Is a Exterior Paint?
Exterior paint is formulated to survive UV degradation, moisture cycling, and temperature swings that interior paint isn't exposed to — resin selection is the biggest differentiator, with 100% acrylic latex the dominant choice for its flexibility (allowing it to expand and contract with the substrate without cracking) and resistance to UV chalking, while alkyd (oil-based) exterior paints offer strong adhesion and leveling but have become less common due to VOC regulation. Elastomeric coatings go further, applying at a much higher film build than standard paint to bridge hairline cracks in masonry and stucco while remaining fully waterproof.
Substrate compatibility drives primer and topcoat selection: bare metal needs a rust-inhibitive or direct-to-metal primer system before topcoating, masonry needs an alkali-resistant formulation to survive the high pH of fresh concrete or stucco, and wood siding needs enough flexibility to handle seasonal swelling without peeling. Sheen level (flat, satin, semi-gloss) is chosen partly for aesthetics and partly for function — higher sheen sheds dirt and moisture better, which is why trim and high-touch areas often specify a higher sheen than field walls.

What's the difference between acrylic latex and elastomeric exterior paint?
Acrylic latex is a standard-film-build exterior paint that flexes with normal substrate movement and resists UV degradation, suitable for most siding and trim. Elastomeric coatings apply at a much thicker film build with significantly higher elongation, allowing them to physically bridge hairline cracks in stucco or masonry while forming a waterproof membrane — they're specified when crack-bridging and waterproofing are the priority, not just color and UV protection.
Why does masonry need a different exterior paint than wood siding?
Fresh concrete, stucco and masonry are highly alkaline, and standard paint resins can be degraded by that alkalinity (a failure mode called saponification), so masonry-rated exterior paints and primers are formulated to be alkali-resistant. Wood siding doesn't have this issue but needs enough flexibility to handle seasonal swelling and shrinking without the paint film cracking or peeling.
Do I need a special primer for bare metal before exterior topcoating?
Yes — bare or previously coated metal generally needs a rust-inhibitive or direct-to-metal primer system matched to the metal type (ferrous vs. non-ferrous) before topcoating, since standard exterior wall paint isn't formulated to inhibit corrosion the way a metal primer system is.
What sheen level should I choose for exterior work?
