What Is a Aluminum Angle Stock?
Aluminum angle stock is an L-shaped extruded profile with two perpendicular legs, used as a structural framing member, corner brace, trim edge or mounting bracket stock, sold as equal-leg (both legs the same width) or unequal-leg (legs differ, used where one flange needs more bearing surface or the other needs to stay low-profile). 6061-T6 is the standard structural alloy, offering higher strength and good machinability for load-bearing framing and brackets; 6063-T52 is a softer, better-finishing alloy commonly used for architectural trim, extrusion frames and cosmetic applications where surface finish matters more than peak strength.
Wall thickness (leg gauge) and leg length together determine load capacity in bending and buckling — increasing leg length improves resistance to bending in the plane of that leg, while wall thickness affects both strength and weight per foot. Angle is typically stocked in 12 or 20-foot mill lengths and custom-cut to length, with tolerances on straightness and leg angle (typically held near 90°) that matter more as the angle is used further from its supported ends.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Leg Configuration | Equal leg vs. unequal leg | Unequal leg suits applications needing more bearing surface on one side than the other |
| Alloy/Temper | 6061-T6 (structural), 6063-T52 (architectural/trim) | 6061-T6 offers higher strength; 6063-T52 offers better finish and formability |
| Leg Dimensions & Wall Thickness | Common: 1x1 to 6x6 inch legs, 1/8 to 1/2 inch wall | Determines load capacity in bending and the angle's overall weight per foot |
| Length | Mill lengths (12ft, 20ft) or custom-cut | Custom cutting avoids field trimming and scrap on fixed-length fabrication runs |
| Finish | Mill finish, anodized, painted | Anodizing/painting adds corrosion and wear resistance for exposed or outdoor use |

FAQ
Aluminum Angle Stock Questions, Answered
What's the difference between 6061-T6 and 6063 aluminum angle?
6061-T6 has higher tensile strength and is the standard choice for structural and load-bearing applications. 6063 (typically T52 temper) is softer with better surface finish and formability, making it the standard for architectural trim and cosmetic extrusion applications where peak strength isn't the priority.
Should I choose equal leg or unequal leg angle?
Equal leg angle suits symmetric bracing and framing applications. Unequal leg angle is specified when one flange needs more bearing surface or fastener room than the other, or when a low-profile leg is needed on one side to clear an obstruction or mating part.
How do I determine what wall thickness (gauge) I need?
Thicker wall increases load capacity in bending and torsion but adds weight and cost. Sizing should be based on the actual span, load and deflection limits of the application — for anything structural or safety-critical, size against an engineering load calculation rather than by matching an existing part visually.
Does aluminum angle come pre-finished?
It's available in mill finish (bare, as-extruded), anodized (for corrosion resistance and cosmetic finish), or painted/powder-coated. Mill finish is standard for structural use where appearance doesn't matter; anodized or painted finishes are specified for exposed or architectural applications.
What length does aluminum angle come in?
Standard mill lengths are commonly 12 feet and 20 feet, and most suppliers offer custom-cut-to-length service to avoid field trimming, reduce scrap, and simplify fabrication on production runs with a fixed cut list.
