Technical Foundation

What Is a Stainless Steel Tubing?

Stainless steel tubing is hollow round, square or rectangular stock produced either seamlessly (extruded and drawn from a solid billet with no weld seam) or by welding a rolled strip and drawing it to final dimension. Seamless tubing has no weld seam to serve as a potential weak point or corrosion initiation site, making it the standard choice for high-pressure or critical fluid handling; welded tubing is more economical and dimensionally consistent, and modern welding methods make it structurally suitable for most non-critical and even many pressure applications.

304 stainless is the general-purpose grade, offering good corrosion resistance and formability for structural, architectural and general fluid handling use. 316/316L adds molybdenum, significantly improving resistance to chlorides and other corrosive media, making it the standard for marine, chemical processing, and pharmaceutical/food sanitary applications where 304 would pit or corrode over time. Sanitary tubing is additionally specified by surface finish (Ra roughness) since a smoother interior bore resists bacterial adhesion and simplifies clean-in-place procedures.

Applications

Where Stainless Steel Tubing Get Used

Stainless steel tubing is specified anywhere corrosion resistance, sanitary cleanliness, or structural appearance matters more than the lower cost of carbon steel.

Food & Beverage Processing

316L sanitary tubing with polished interior bores used for product-contact piping meeting 3-A sanitary standards.

Pharmaceutical & Biotech Manufacturing

Electropolished 316L tubing specified for cleanroom process piping requiring minimal surface roughness.

Architectural Railing & Structural Trim

Polished 304 tubing used for handrails, guardrails and decorative structural elements.

Marine Hardware & Shipbuilding

316 stainless tubing specified for its superior resistance to saltwater and chloride-induced corrosion.

Chemical Processing

316L tubing used for corrosive fluid transfer lines where 304 grade would degrade prematurely.

Instrumentation & Hydraulic Lines

Small-diameter seamless tubing used for pressure gauge and control line runs requiring a weld-free bore.

FAQ

Stainless Steel Tubing Questions, Answered

What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel tubing?

316 stainless contains added molybdenum, which significantly improves resistance to chlorides, acids and marine/saltwater environments compared to 304. 304 is the more economical general-purpose grade, adequate for most indoor structural, architectural and dry-environment applications, but 316 (or 316L) is the standard specification anywhere the tubing will contact saltwater, harsh chemicals, or food/pharma product requiring sanitary-grade corrosion resistance.

Should I choose seamless or welded stainless tubing?

Seamless tubing has no weld seam, eliminating a potential weak point and corrosion initiation site, making it the traditional choice for high-pressure or critical fluid systems. Welded tubing is more dimensionally consistent and economical, and modern high-quality welding (often followed by re-drawing) makes it structurally sound for most architectural, structural, and even many pressure applications — the choice usually comes down to the specific pressure rating and certification requirements of the application.

What does the 'L' mean in 304L or 316L?

The 'L' denotes a low-carbon variant of the grade (typically under 0.03% carbon versus up to 0.08% in the standard grade), which reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during welding — a phenomenon called sensitization that can lead to intergranular corrosion near welds. 304L and 316L are specified whenever the tubing will be welded during fabrication.

What surface finish do I need for sanitary/food-grade tubing?

Sanitary tubing is typically specified with an interior surface roughness at or below Ra 32 microinches (0.8 micrometers), often achieved through mechanical polishing or electropolishing, because a rougher surface allows bacteria and product residue to adhere and resist cleaning. Confirm the specific Ra requirement against the applicable 3-A sanitary or pharmaceutical standard for your process.

How is stainless tubing sized — by OD or by nominal pipe size?

Round tubing is almost always specified by actual outer diameter (OD) and wall thickness, unlike pipe, which is sized by a nominal diameter that doesn't match its actual OD. When a spec calls out 'stainless tube' with dimensions like 1" OD x .065" wall, that OD is the tube's true measured outer diameter — always confirm which sizing convention a drawing or spec is using before ordering, since 'tube' and 'pipe' sizing schemes are not interchangeable.
