What Is a Grating Clip?

A grating clip is a fastener that secures a steel, aluminum, or fiberglass bar grating panel to its supporting structural member — an I-beam flange, channel, or angle — without welding, allowing the panel to be removed later for equipment access or maintenance while resisting uplift, shifting, and vibration in service. Saddle-style clips straddle the bearing bar and a section of the support flange, secured with a bolt that draws the clip tight against both, while J-clips hook under the support flange edge and are tightened against the grating from above, suited to installations where access beneath the support flange is limited.

Clip selection must match the grating's bearing bar depth and spacing (the clip has to seat correctly against the actual bar cross-section) as well as the support member's flange thickness, since an undersized or mismatched clip won't develop full clamping force and can loosen under vibration or foot/vehicle traffic. Material — galvanized steel for general use, or stainless steel/specialty clips for fiberglass grating and corrosive environments — is chosen to match the grating and structural material's corrosion environment, since a dissimilar-metal clip on fiberglass grating in a wet environment can introduce localized corrosion or degrade the grating's resin at the clamp point.

FAQ

Grating Clips Questions, Answered

What's the difference between a saddle clip and a J-clip?

A saddle clip straddles both the grating's bearing bar and the support flange in a single piece, tightened with a bolt that draws the two together — it generally requires access to install the bolt from above or the side. A J-clip hooks under the edge of the support flange and is tightened from above against the grating, which makes it a common choice where there's no practical access to bolt beneath the support flange directly.

How many clips are needed per grating panel?

Clip spacing and quantity depend on the panel size, expected loading (foot traffic vs. vehicle traffic), and local structural or safety code requirements, but a common general guideline is at least one clip at each corner of a grating panel plus additional clips along longer edges, particularly for panels subject to vibration or dynamic loads. Always follow the grating manufacturer's or structural engineer's specified clip count and spacing rather than a rule of thumb alone.

Can steel grating clips be used to secure fiberglass (FRP) grating?

Not generally recommended without confirming compatibility — standard steel saddle clips designed for steel bar grating can over-compress or crack fiberglass grating's resin bearing bars if over-torqued, since FRP doesn't have the same compressive strength as steel. Fiberglass grating installations typically use clips specifically designed and rated for FRP, which distribute clamping force differently to avoid damaging the panel.

What material clip should I use on stainless or fiberglass grating in a wet environment?

Stainless steel clips are generally specified alongside stainless steel grating, and non-metallic or coated clips are often used with fiberglass grating, both to avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals and to match the overall corrosion resistance of the grating system. Using a plain galvanized steel clip on stainless or fiberglass grating in a wet or chemically exposed environment can create a localized corrosion point even if the grating itself is fully corrosion-resistant.

Do grating clips need to be periodically re-torqued or inspected?

Yes — clips subject to vibration, thermal cycling, or repeated loading (foot or vehicle traffic) can loosen over time, so periodic inspection and re-torquing as part of a facility's routine maintenance program is standard practice, particularly in industrial platform and walkway applications. A loose or missing clip should be addressed promptly since it compromises the panel's uplift and shift resistance.
