What Is a Plier Clamp?
A plier clamp (locking plier or vise-grip style tool) uses an over-center toggle mechanism to lock its jaws onto a workpiece at a set clamping force, freeing the user's hands once locked rather than requiring continuous squeeze pressure like a standard clamp. An adjustment screw in the handle sets the jaw opening and resulting clamp force before the toggle is engaged.
Jaw geometry is matched to the task: C-clamp style jaws with a swiveling pad distribute clamping force over a flat area for sheet metal and welding fixturing, curved jaws grip round stock like pipe and rod, and specialized panel clamps use offset jaws to hold body panels flush during auto body work. What's the difference between a locking C-clamp plier and a standard locking plier?
A locking C-clamp plier has a swiveling pad on one jaw and a wider, flatter clamping surface similar to a traditional C-clamp, designed to distribute force evenly over sheet metal or flat stock, while a standard locking plier (vise-grip style) has narrower, often serrated jaws better suited to gripping round stock, bolts, or irregular objects.
How do I adjust the clamping force on locking pliers?
Turn the adjustment screw in the end of the handle — clockwise typically increases jaw closing force (tightening the initial jaw gap before the toggle locks), and counterclockwise decreases it. Set the screw so the jaws lock firmly on the workpiece with a firm but not excessive squeeze of the handles.
Why do welding clamps need higher clamping force than general-purpose locking pliers?

What throat depth do I need for a C-clamp plier?
Throat depth should exceed the distance from the workpiece edge to where the clamp needs to apply pressure — shallow-throat clamps are fine for edge work, but reaching further onto a panel or across a wider seam requires a deeper-throat model.
