What Is a Spiral and Tube Brushe?
A spiral (twisted-in-wire) brush is formed by twisting two wires around a core of filament — steel, brass, nylon or abrasive-nylon — so the bristles stand out radially along a cylindrical brush head sized to a specific bore or tube ID. They are mounted on a rigid or flexible shaft and spun or pushed through a bore to remove scale, carbon, rust or debris, or to deburr a cross-drilled hole, without removing base material the way a reamer would.
Selection starts with the bore or tube inside diameter, since the brush head must be sized close to that ID to make full bristle contact without binding. Fill material is chosen by hardness of the deposit and the base tube material: carbon steel wire for scale and rust on ferrous tube, brass or stainless for softer removal without scratching non-ferrous tube, and nylon or abrasive nylon where a metal fill would be too aggressive on the substrate.

How do I pick the right bore diameter for a spiral brush?
Measure the tube or hole's inside diameter and choose a brush head sized close to that ID — most manufacturers list a nominal bore range per brush. A head sized too small won't contact the full bore wall and leaves deposits behind; one sized too large will bind on insertion or distort the bristle pattern, reducing cleaning effectiveness and shortening brush life.
What's the difference between wire fill and nylon fill brushes?
Wire fill (carbon steel, brass, or stainless) is more aggressive and suited to hard scale, rust, or carbon deposits on metal tube. Nylon and abrasive-nylon fill is gentler, used where a metal bristle would scratch a soft or coated substrate, or where any embedded metal fragments would be a contamination concern, such as in food or pharmaceutical tubing.
Can spiral brushes be used with a power drill?
Yes — most spiral and tube brushes are made with a shaft ending in a plain shank or threaded stud sized for a standard drill chuck, letting the brush be spun through the bore under power. Flexible cable-shaft versions are also available for reaching bends in a tubing run that a rigid shaft can't follow.
Will a wire brush remove material from the tube wall?
A properly sized spiral brush is designed to remove surface deposits — scale, rust, carbon, oxide — without significantly abrading the base tube material, unlike a reamer or hone which is designed to remove metal. Running an oversized or overly stiff brush, or applying excessive dwell time, can still produce light scoring, so fill stiffness should be matched to the base material's hardness.
How do I clean boiler or condenser tubes with these brushes?
Boiler and condenser tube brushes are sized to the tube ID and mounted on a shaft or flexible cable long enough to pass through the full tube length, then driven through by hand, drill, or a dedicated tube-cleaning machine to break up scale and soot. Brush stiffness is chosen for the deposit type, and multiple passes with progressively stiffer brushes are common for heavy scale buildup.
