What Is a Surface Protection Film?
Surface protection film is a thin, self-adhesive polyethylene or polypropylene film applied temporarily to a finished surface to shield it from scratches, dust, paint overspray and construction debris during fabrication, transport, storage or installation, then peeled off once the protected surface is ready for final use. Adhesion level is the primary selection variable — low-tack films are used on sensitive or easily marked surfaces like polished stainless or coated glass, while higher-tack films are needed on rougher or vertical surfaces where the film must resist lifting during handling.
Duration rating matters because adhesive chemistry changes with UV and thermal exposure over time — a film rated for 30-day indoor use left on a surface for months exposed to sunlight can degrade, leaving adhesive residue that's difficult to remove or, worse, becoming difficult to remove without damaging the substrate underneath. Films are substrate-specific in formulation; a metal protection film's adhesive is tuned differently than a flooring film's, since flooring films must withstand foot and light equipment traffic without tearing or bunching.
