What Is a Reflective Clothing Tape?
Reflective clothing tape is a retroreflective trim — typically a woven or vinyl-coated fabric embedded with glass beads or a microprismatic film — sewn or heat-applied onto safety apparel so that headlight or spotlight beams are bounced directly back toward their source, making the wearer visible in low light. It's used both by garment manufacturers building new high-visibility apparel and by end users repairing or upgrading existing gear whose reflective trim has worn out or delaminated.
Tape is manufactured in standard widths (most commonly 1 inch and 2 inch) and colors (silver is the standard high-visibility color; lime, orange and combination striping are used on ANSI 107 Class 2/3 garments and specialty apparel). Application method matters as much as reflectivity rating: sew-on tape is stitched through pre-punched or perforated edges for durability through industrial laundering, while iron-on/heat-transfer tape bonds under a heat press and suits lighter-duty or one-off repairs but generally won't survive repeated commercial laundry cycles as well as sewn trim.

What's the difference between sew-on and iron-on reflective tape?
Sew-on reflective tape is stitched through the garment with a sewing machine, generally along pre-perforated or reinforced edges, and holds up best through repeated industrial laundering — it's the standard for manufactured ANSI 107 garments. Iron-on (heat-transfer) tape bonds to fabric under a heat press using an adhesive backing and is faster to apply without a needle and thread, but the bond typically degrades faster under commercial wash-and-dry cycles, making it better suited to lighter-duty apparel or occasional-use garments.
Does reflective tape by itself make a garment ANSI/ISEA 107 compliant?
No. ANSI/ISEA 107 compliance depends on the whole garment — background material color and area, reflective trim width and total surface area, and trim placement pattern all have to meet the standard's requirements for the intended class (Class 1, 2, or 3). Adding tape to a garment that wasn't designed and tested as a complete ANSI 107 assembly does not make it a certified high-visibility garment, even if the tape itself is ANSI-rated material.
Can reflective tape go on fire-resistant (FR) clothing?
Standard reflective tape can degrade or off-gas under heat and shouldn't be applied to FR/arc-rated garments. Use fire-resistant reflective trim specifically rated for FR apparel — it's usually segmented into small squares connected by thread rather than a continuous strip, so the trim doesn't melt into a continuous line that could compromise the garment's flame-resistance under heat exposure.
How many wash cycles does reflective tape typically last?
It depends heavily on tape quality, application method, and laundering conditions, but sew-on tape on ANSI-rated garments is commonly rated for 25 to 75+ industrial wash cycles before retroreflectivity drops below the standard's minimum. Iron-on tape and home laundering (high heat, harsh detergents) will generally shorten usable life. Always check the specific manufacturer's wash rating rather than assuming performance.
What widths and colors of reflective tape are most common for repairs?
2-inch silver is the most common width and color for general ANSI 107 vest and jacket repair, matching the trim most manufacturers originally use. 1-inch tape is common on smaller garments like hats or sleeve cuffs, and combination lime-silver-lime or orange-silver-orange striping is used to match Class 2/3 garments that specify segmented color patterns rather than plain silver.
