What does carriage preload actually affect?

Preload sets the internal clearance (or interference) between the recirculating balls and the raceway. Higher preload classes increase system rigidity and positioning accuracy, which matters for precision machining and gantry alignment, but also increase rolling friction and the torque needed to drive the axis.
