What Is a Diamond Saw Blade?
A diamond saw blade uses a steel core with diamond-embedded segments bonded to its outer edge, cutting by abrasion rather than a traditional tooth-and-gullet action — the diamonds continuously micro-fracture and expose fresh cutting edges as the bond matrix wears away at a controlled rate. Bond hardness must be matched inversely to material hardness: a soft bond is used to cut hard, dense materials (fully cured concrete, granite) because it wears fast enough to expose new diamonds, while a hard bond is used on soft, abrasive materials (asphalt, green concrete) where a soft bond would erode too quickly.
Rim style determines cutting speed and finish: segmented (turbo) rims cut fastest and run cooler due to gaps between segments that clear debris and allow airflow, continuous rims produce the cleanest, chip-free edge for tile and stone, and tuck-point blades use a narrower kerf for cutting out mortar joints. Wet-cutting blades rely on water for cooling and dust suppression and can overheat quickly if run dry; dry-cut blades are engineered with segment gaps and cooling slots to manage heat without water but still benefit from intermittent cutting to avoid overheating.

How do I choose the right bond hardness for my material?
Bond hardness works inversely to material hardness — a soft-bond blade is used on hard, dense materials like fully cured concrete or granite because the bond wears away fast enough to continuously expose sharp diamonds, while a hard-bond blade is used on soft, abrasive materials like asphalt or green (uncured) concrete, where a soft bond would erode too quickly and waste diamond. Using the wrong bond leads to either a glazed-over blade that won't cut or premature blade wear.
Can I use a wet-cut blade dry, or vice versa?
Wet-cut-only blades rely on water for both cooling and dust suppression and can overheat within seconds of dry use, causing the steel core to warp or diamond segments to detach. Dry-capable blades are engineered with wider segment gaps and cooling slots for airflow but should still be run intermittently (a few seconds of cutting, then a pause) rather than continuously to manage heat. Using a wet-only blade dry is a common cause of premature blade failure.
What's the difference between segmented, continuous rim, and turbo blades?
Segmented blades have distinct gaps between diamond segments that clear debris and dust and cut fastest, but leave a slightly rougher edge — good for general concrete and masonry cutting. Continuous rim blades have no gaps, cutting more slowly but producing a smooth, chip-free edge preferred for tile and polished stone. Turbo blades are a segmented variant with an undulating, angled segment pattern that improves cutting speed while retaining most of the edge quality of a continuous rim.
What happens if I use a blade rated for the wrong arbor size?
The blade's arbor hole must match the saw's spindle exactly, or use a manufacturer-approved bushing to adapt it safely — never force-fit or modify a blade's arbor hole, as an improperly mounted blade can wobble, bind, or detach during operation, creating a serious safety hazard. Always confirm arbor size and any required bushings before purchasing.
Why does my diamond blade seem to have stopped cutting even though there's diamond left?
This is usually a sign of a 'glazed' blade — the bond matrix has become too hard for the material being cut, so it isn't wearing away to expose fresh diamond, leaving a smooth, dull-feeling edge. Cutting a few passes through an abrasive material like cinder block can re-open the bond and expose new diamond; if that doesn't help, the bond hardness likely doesn't match the material and a different blade is needed.
