What Is a Cable Hoists and Ratchet Puller?
A cable hoist or come-along puller is a manually operated device that uses a ratcheting lever mechanism to draw in a wire rope (cable), generating a mechanical-advantage pull or lift far exceeding the operator's own arm force. Rated capacity refers to the maximum load the unit is designed to pull or lift under a straight, unobstructed pull — capacity derates significantly if the cable is angled or wrapped around an obstruction rather than pulled in a straight line.
Two ratings matter on any cable puller: the working load limit (WLL), the maximum load for normal operation with a safety margin built in, and the breaking strength, the load at which the cable or mechanism actually fails. Never select equipment based on breaking strength — always specify and operate within the WLL, and inspect wire rope regularly for broken strands, kinks, or corrosion before each use.

What's the difference between working load limit and breaking strength?
Working load limit (WLL) is the maximum load the equipment is rated for during normal safe operation, built with a safety margin below actual failure. Breaking strength is the load at which the cable or mechanism actually fails. Equipment must always be selected and operated within its WLL — never treat breaking strength as an operating target.
Does the rated capacity change if I pull at an angle instead of straight?
Yes — rated capacity assumes a straight-line pull between the anchor and the load. Pulling at an angle, around a corner, or with the cable rubbing an obstruction significantly reduces effective capacity and increases wear and failure risk. Reposition the anchor point or use a snatch block to redirect the pull cleanly where possible.
How often should I inspect the wire rope cable?
Inspect before every use for broken strands, kinks, birdcaging, corrosion, and wear at contact points, and retire the cable per the manufacturer's discard criteria if damage is found — a compromised cable can fail well below its rated capacity.
What size come-along do I need for a typical vehicle recovery?
Vehicle recovery generally calls for units in the 2-4 ton WLL range depending on vehicle weight, terrain, and whether the vehicle is stuck versus fully mired, though a snatch block can double effective pulling force from a smaller unit at the cost of pull distance per stroke.
Can a cable hoist be used for vertical lifting, not just horizontal pulling?
Some cable hoists are rated and configured for vertical lifting, but many come-along style pullers are designed and rated specifically for horizontal or angled pulling. Check the manufacturer's rating and configuration before using any unit for overhead lifting, and never lift loads over personnel with equipment not rated and inspected for lifting service.
