What Is a Miniature Pushbutton Switche?

Miniature pushbutton switches mount through a round hole in a panel — common sizes are 12mm, 16mm, and 22mm — and are specified by actuation type (momentary, returning to its resting state when released, vs. latching/maintained, staying in the pressed state until pressed again) and contact configuration (SPST, SPDT, or multiple poles). Contact rating in amps at a given voltage must be checked against the actual load being switched, and — as with relays and timers — the AC and DC ratings differ substantially since DC current doesn't have a natural zero-crossing to help extinguish an arc at the contacts.

Environmental sealing (IP rating) matters wherever the switch is exposed to washdown, dust, or outdoor conditions — an unsealed switch will accumulate contamination in the actuator mechanism and eventually fail to make reliable contact. Illuminated versions integrate an LED or incandescent lamp behind a translucent actuator cap, requiring a separate indicator voltage that must be confirmed compatible with the panel's control voltage, since the lamp circuit is typically independent of the switching contacts.

FAQ

Miniature Pushbutton Switches Questions, Answered

What's the difference between a momentary and a latching pushbutton switch?

A momentary switch only closes (or opens) its contacts while physically held pressed, returning to its resting state as soon as it's released — used for start/stop or jog-type controls. A latching (maintained) switch stays in the actuated position after being pressed once, and requires a second press to return to its original state — used where a control needs to hold a state, like an enable/disable toggle, without continuous physical pressure.

Why does the DC contact rating differ from the AC rating on the same switch?

AC current naturally passes through zero twice per cycle, which helps extinguish the arc that forms as contacts separate under load. DC current has no zero-crossing, so the arc at DC tends to sustain longer and generate more heat and contact erosion at the same current level — for this reason, a switch's DC rating at a given voltage is typically lower than its AC rating, and both figures need to be checked against the actual application.

What mounting hole size do I need for a panel-mount pushbutton switch?

Common standardized sizes are 12mm, 16mm, and 22mm round panel cutouts, and the switch must be ordered to match whatever cutout size the panel already has or will be drilled to — this isn't adjustable after the fact, so confirm the panel's cutout diameter before ordering rather than assuming a size.

Do I need an IP-rated (sealed) pushbutton switch for my application?

If the panel is exposed to washdown, outdoor weather, dust, or significant moisture, an IP65 or IP67 sealed switch is needed to keep contamination out of the actuator mechanism, which otherwise degrades contact reliability over time. For a clean, dry indoor control panel, an unsealed switch is generally adequate and less expensive.

How does an illuminated pushbutton's lamp circuit relate to its switching contacts?

The illumination (LED or incandescent lamp behind the actuator cap) is typically wired as a separate circuit from the switch's load-switching contacts, often requiring its own indicator voltage supply — confirm the lamp's rated voltage matches what's available in the panel, since it's common for the lamp circuit voltage to differ from the voltage being switched by the contacts themselves.
