What Is a Lamp Changer?
A lamp changer is a telescoping or sectional pole, typically fiberglass for its non-conductive and lightweight properties, fitted with a specialized head that grips a lamp's base or body to allow installing or removing bulbs mounted 15-40 feet overhead from ground level. The head design must match the lamp geometry it's gripping: suction-cup heads work on smooth-domed HID and incandescent lamps, while spring-loaded or basket-style grippers accommodate a range of lamp shapes including LED high-bay fixtures with different body profiles.
Pole length and rigidity are sized to the fixture mounting height with enough working clearance — an underpowered or overly flexible pole makes it difficult to align and twist a lamp into a mogul-base socket from 20+ feet away, especially for lamps requiring a quarter-turn locking motion. Fiberglass construction is standard for changers used near or on energized fixtures because it doesn't conduct electricity, unlike aluminum extension poles.

Do I need a different lamp changer head for LED fixtures versus HID lamps?
Often yes — suction cup heads work well on the smooth, rounded dome of HID and incandescent lamps but may not grip securely on LED high-bay fixtures, which frequently have a squared-off or finned body shape for heat dissipation. Universal or basket-style gripper heads are designed to accommodate a wider range of lamp shapes, including LED fixtures, and are worth choosing if a facility is mixing HID and LED lighting during a retrofit transition.
Why is fiberglass preferred over aluminum for lamp changer poles?
Fiberglass doesn't conduct electricity, which matters because lamp changing is performed at or near an energized fixture socket, and an aluminum pole accidentally contacting a live component creates a serious shock hazard. Fiberglass is also lighter than a comparable-strength aluminum pole at long extended lengths, reducing user fatigue during overhead work.
How do I choose the right pole length for my fixtures?
Measure the mounting height of the fixture and add several feet of comfortable ground-level working clearance — a pole that just barely reaches the fixture makes it difficult to align, twist, and lock a lamp into a mogul-base socket. Can a lamp changer be used on a live (energized) fixture?

Some lamp types and sockets use a straight insertion/removal motion instead, so matching the head's mechanism to the fixture's socket type is necessary for the lamp to seat and lock correctly.
