What Is a Mobile Oil Cooler?
A mobile oil cooler rejects heat generated by hydraulic pump inefficiency, transmission torque converter slip, or engine oil operating temperature by passing the fluid through a finned core exposed to ambient airflow, either from vehicle motion, a dedicated electric or hydraulic-driven fan, or a combination. Cooler capacity is rated in BTU/hr or kW of heat rejection at a given flow rate (GPM) and temperature differential between the oil and ambient air, and undersizing a cooler leads to chronic overheating that accelerates oil oxidation and seal degradation throughout the system.
Core construction differs between bar-and-plate designs, which handle higher pressure and are more resistant to vibration fatigue common in mobile equipment, and tube-and-fin designs, which are typically lighter and lower cost but less tolerant of high system pressure if plumbed in the pressure line rather than the return line. A thermostatic bypass valve routes flow around the cooler until the oil reaches operating temperature, protecting seals from cold-start pressure spikes and reducing unnecessary fan run time.

How do I size a hydraulic oil cooler for my equipment?
Start from the system's actual heat load — often estimated from pump inefficiency and duty cycle, or measured directly with a temperature probe on an existing overheating system — then select a cooler rated to reject that heat load (in BTU/hr or kW) at your system's flow rate and the maximum ambient temperature you operate in. Undersizing based on flow rate alone without considering heat load and ambient conditions is a common sizing mistake.
What's the difference between a bar-and-plate and tube-and-fin cooler?
Bar-and-plate coolers use stacked, brazed aluminum plates and are more resistant to pressure spikes and vibration fatigue, making them well suited to mobile equipment and pressure-line installation. Tube-and-fin coolers use round or oval tubes with fins bonded on, are generally lighter and less expensive, but are typically better suited to lower-pressure return-line cooling rather than high-pressure applications.
Do I need a fan-assisted cooler or will ambient airflow be enough?
Equipment that moves at speed with good airflow across the cooler (like some highway trucks) may get by with a static core, but most off-highway and mobile equipment — excavators, skid steers, stationary or slow-moving equipment — needs a dedicated electric or hydraulic-driven fan to maintain airflow across the core regardless of vehicle speed or engine RPM.
What does a thermostatic bypass valve do and do I need one?
A thermostatic bypass valve routes oil around the cooler core until the fluid reaches a set operating temperature, which protects seals from the pressure spike caused by pumping cold, viscous oil through a restrictive cooler core, and reduces unnecessary cooling (and fan power draw) during warm-up or light-load conditions. It's recommended on most mobile hydraulic systems, particularly those that start in cold ambient conditions.
Can I install an oil cooler on the pressure line instead of the return line?
Only if the cooler is rated for the system's working pressure — bar-and-plate coolers are commonly rated for pressure-line service, while lighter tube-and-fin coolers are usually intended for the low-pressure return line only. Installing an under-rated cooler on a high-pressure line risks core rupture and catastrophic fluid loss.
