What Is a Liquid Tight Conduit Fitting?
A liquid tight connector joins flexible liquid tight conduit (metallic or non-metallic, jacketed flexible conduit) to an enclosure, box or another conduit run while maintaining a sealed connection against moisture, oil and washdown spray, as opposed to a standard flexible conduit connector that only provides a mechanical and electrical connection. The seal is created by an internal compression ring or grommet that clamps against the conduit's outer jacket as the fitting's coupling nut is tightened, and connector angle (straight, 45-degree or 90-degree) is chosen to route the conduit cleanly out of an enclosure knockout without a tight bend radius that could stress the conduit.
Connector body material — zinc die cast, steel, or non-metallic nylon/PVC — is selected against the installation environment and, for metallic conduit systems, whether the fitting itself needs to serve as part of the equipment grounding path. Insulated throat versions add a plastic bushing at the conductor entry point to protect wire insulation from abrasion against the fitting's metal edge, which is required by code in many applications above a minimum conduit size.
