What Is a Disc Padlock?
A disc padlock is built around a round, flattened body with the shackle recessed or fully shrouded within the lock body itself, rather than exposed as it is on a standard shackle padlock. This geometry drastically reduces the area of shackle exposed to a bolt cutter or hacksaw, and the round body shape resists being gripped or twisted with a pipe wrench or similar leverage tool the way a standard padlock's flat sides can be.
Most disc padlocks use a rotating disc detainer or pin tumbler mechanism internally, and the shackle rotates rather than swings open, retracting into the body to release whatever is secured through the shrouded opening. Because the shackle geometry is fundamentally different from a standard U-shackle padlock, disc padlocks require hasps and fittings specifically designed for their round profile — a standard hasp built for a conventional padlock will not accommodate a disc lock's body shape.
