What Is a Window Sight Flow Indicator?
A sight flow indicator is an inline fitting with a transparent window (glass or, less commonly, a high-strength polymer) installed directly in a process pipeline to give operators a visual check of whether liquid is flowing, its approximate rate, color, or clarity, without needing an electronic flow meter. Basic 'window' style units simply let light through the flow stream, while units with an internal paddle wheel or rotor add a visible mechanical indication of flow that's easier to see at a glance from a distance or in low-light plant conditions.
Body material and connection type must be selected for compatibility with both the process fluid and the piping system: threaded units suit smaller utility lines, flanged units are standard for larger process piping and higher pressure service, and sanitary tri-clamp versions are required in food, beverage and pharmaceutical processing where the fitting must be quickly disassembled for cleaning and meet 3-A sanitary standards.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Window Type | Plain glass vs. paddle-wheel/rotor indicator | Rotor style gives clearer visual confirmation of flow rate/direction at a glance vs. plain window |
| Connection Type | NPT threaded, flanged (ANSI), tri-clamp sanitary | Must match the piping system's connection standard and the line's pressure class |
| Body Material | Cast iron, bronze, stainless steel | Selected for chemical compatibility with the process fluid and required corrosion resistance |
| Glass Rating | Borosilicate glass, pressure/temperature rated | Must be rated for the line's maximum operating pressure and temperature, not just nominal service |
| Gasket Material | PTFE, EPDM, Viton | Must be chemically compatible with the process fluid to prevent leakage at the glass seal |

FAQ
Window Sight Flow Indicators Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a plain window and a paddle-wheel sight flow indicator?
A plain window sight glass just lets an operator see through the flow stream to confirm liquid is present and roughly its color or clarity. A paddle-wheel (rotor) style adds an internal wheel that visibly spins with flow, giving a much clearer at-a-glance confirmation that flow is actually occurring, especially useful with clear or fast-moving fluids that are hard to visually judge through a plain window.
Do I need a flanged or threaded sight flow indicator?
Threaded (NPT) connections are typical for smaller utility and low-pressure lines, while flanged connections are standard for larger process piping and higher-pressure service since they distribute bolting load more evenly and are the norm on process piping following ANSI flange standards. Match the connection type to what the rest of your piping run uses.
Why do food and beverage lines require sanitary sight glasses?
Sanitary (tri-clamp) sight flow indicators are designed for quick tool-free disassembly and have crevice-free internal geometry that meets 3-A sanitary standards, allowing full cleaning between production runs — a standard threaded or flanged sight glass isn't designed for this and can harbor product residue or bacteria.
What glass material is used and how is it rated for pressure?
Most sight flow indicators use borosilicate glass for its strength and thermal shock resistance, and the glass and its retaining mechanism are pressure- and temperature-rated as an assembly — always confirm the manufacturer's rated maximum pressure and temperature for the specific model against your actual line conditions, not just the nominal pipe class.
How do I choose the gasket material for my sight glass?
Gasket material must be chemically compatible with the process fluid to avoid swelling, degradation or leakage at the glass seal — PTFE offers the broadest chemical resistance for aggressive fluids, EPDM is common for water and mild chemicals, and Viton is preferred for petroleum-based fluids and higher-temperature service.
