What Is a Gasket Cutter?
A gasket cutter fabricates a custom flat gasket from sheet stock — cork, rubber, cork-rubber, felt, or non-asbestos fiber — when a matching pre-cut gasket isn't available or a replacement is needed in the field. Adjustable rotary cutters use a pivoting arm with a sharp cutting wheel to score both the outer diameter and bolt-hole circle in one continuous motion, sized by adjusting the arm length to the flange's actual diameter rather than relying on stocked pre-cut sizes.
Hollow punch sets cut clean, round bolt holes through the same sheet stock after the outer profile is cut, and are sized to match standard bolt clearance diameters. Blade or wheel material and sharpness matter more for gasket sheet than for metal — a dull or incorrect blade tears and compresses soft gasket material rather than shearing it cleanly, leaving a ragged edge that won't seal.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting Method | Rotary wheel, hand blade, hollow punch | Rotary cutters handle round outer profiles fast; punches handle individual bolt holes cleanly |
| Diameter Range | Typically 2"-12" or 1/2"-24" adjustable | Must cover the largest and smallest flange diameters the shop regularly services |
| Gasket Material | Cork, rubber, cork-rubber, felt, non-asbestos fiber | Blade sharpness and pressure needed varies significantly by sheet material hardness |
| Bolt Hole Sizing | Matched to standard bolt clearance diameters | Punch set range should match the bolt sizes used on serviced flanges, not just round numbers |
| Blade/Wheel Material | Hardened steel, replaceable wheel inserts | Replaceable cutting wheels extend tool life without replacing the whole cutter body |

Where Gasket Cutters Get Used
Gasket cutters are specified anywhere a custom flange or cover gasket needs to be fabricated from sheet stock rather than sourced pre-cut.
Industrial Plant Maintenance
Field fabrication of flange gaskets during pump, valve, and piping maintenance when an exact pre-cut replacement isn't stocked.
Automotive & Small Engine Repair
Custom-cut gaskets for valve covers, oil pans, and other flanges on older or non-standard equipment.
HVAC & Sheet Metal Shops
On-site gasket fabrication for ductwork access panels and equipment flanges.
Marine & Off-Highway Equipment
Field gasket fabrication where downtime for an ordered replacement part isn't practical.
MRO & Facilities Maintenance
Stocked gasket cutting kits allowing maintenance techs to fabricate replacements from bulk sheet stock on demand.
FAQ
Gasket Cutters Questions, Answered
How does an adjustable rotary gasket cutter work?
An adjustable rotary cutter has a pivoting arm with a sharp cutting wheel on one end and an adjustable center point on the other. You set the arm length to match the flange's outer radius, place the center point on the sheet stock, and rotate the arm around it to score a clean circular cut — the same tool typically cuts both the outer diameter and, with the arm reset, the bolt-hole circle.
What's the difference between using a rotary cutter and a hollow punch?
A rotary cutter is best for continuous circular or curved cuts, like a gasket's outer profile. A hollow punch is a tubular steel punch, struck with a hammer, that cuts a single clean round hole in one strike — used for bolt holes after the outer gasket shape is already cut, since a rotary cutter can't easily produce small isolated holes.
What gasket sheet materials can these cutters handle?
Most rotary and hand cutters handle cork, rubber, cork-rubber composite, felt, and non-asbestos fiber gasket sheet. Thicker or harder sheet stock requires more cutting passes or a sharper blade — a dull blade tends to tear or compress soft material rather than shear it cleanly, leaving a ragged edge that can leak.
How do I size a hollow punch set for my bolt pattern?
Hollow punch sets are sold in graduated diameter sets (commonly covering 1/8" to 2" or metric equivalents) matched to standard bolt clearance hole sizes. Measure the actual bolt diameter on the flange and select a punch that gives standard clearance — too tight a hole will bind on the bolt during assembly, too loose reduces the gasket's sealing contact around the hole.
Can I cut a gasket for an odd-shaped or non-round flange?
Rotary and hollow punch cutters are designed for round profiles and holes. For irregular or non-round flanges, a hand gasket cutter (a curved or straight blade used freehand, often against a template or the old gasket) is typically used instead, tracing the flange or an existing gasket as a pattern.
