Without adequate offset, the retrieval line would drag against the opening's edge instead of running clear, creating a snag and abrasion hazard.

Load rating must account for both the static weight of a suspended entrant and equipment, plus the dynamic loading that occurs during an actual fall arrest event, which can momentarily multiply the static load several times over — this is why fall protection components are rated and tested per ANSI Z359 standards rather than simply rated to a static working load with a generic safety factor.

A fixed-offset mast has one set reach distance, suitable for a facility with consistently sized entry points. An adjustable-offset mast can be field-configured to different reach distances, which is valuable for facilities or rescue teams that need one hoist system to serve multiple entry point configurations without carrying a dedicated mast for each.

OSHA and ANSI Z359 both require regular inspection of fall protection and rescue equipment, typically before each use for visible damage or wear, plus a documented periodic (often annual) inspection by a competent person — check pins, welds, and the pulley/sheave for wear, and remove any component from service immediately if damage or deformation is found.
