What Is a Fastener Assortment?
A well-built fastener assortment is organized around two axes that matter more than raw piece count: thread standard (SAE/inch vs. ISO metric, which are not interchangeable even at visually similar sizes) and material grade (commonly Grade 2, 5, and 8 in SAE, or property classes 4.8, 8.8, and 10.9 in metric), since grade determines tensile strength and using an assortment's lowest-grade fastener in a structural or safety-critical application is a common and serious mistake that a mixed, unlabeled bin makes easy to happen accidentally.
Quality assortments keep each bin or compartment labeled with size, thread pitch, and grade markings visible on the fastener head (grade markings are radial lines on SAE bolts, numbers on metric), so a technician selecting a replacement fastener can match grade as well as size and thread rather than guessing from visual size alone. A cabinet or case system with individually labeled, refillable bins is worth the added cost over a single mixed bag for any shop doing repeat work, since running low on one specific size in an otherwise full assortment is far easier to spot and reorder against a labeled system.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Thread Standard | SAE/inch vs. ISO metric | Not interchangeable even at visually similar diameters — mixing standards in one bin risks a wrong-thread install |
| Grade/Property Class | Grade 2/5/8 (SAE), 4.8/8.8/10.9 (metric) | Determines tensile strength; using a low-grade fastener from a mixed bin in a structural application is a common failure mode |
| Fastener Types Included | Bolts, nuts, screws, washers per kit | Determines whether the kit covers your actual repair/assembly needs or just general stock |
| Organization/Labeling | Labeled bins vs. single mixed container | Labeled, sorted bins prevent size/grade mix-ups and make reordering depleted sizes easier |
| Coating/Material | Zinc plated, stainless steel, black oxide | Determines corrosion resistance appropriate to indoor vs. outdoor/washdown/corrosive use |

FAQ
Fastener Assortments Questions, Answered
Why does fastener grade matter if the size and thread already match?
Grade determines tensile strength — a Grade 2 bolt and a visually similar Grade 8 bolt of the same size and thread can have very different load capacity, and substituting a lower grade in a structural, suspension, or safety-critical application risks fastener failure under load that a size match alone wouldn't predict. Always check grade markings on the fastener head, not just size.
How do I tell SAE and metric fasteners apart if they're mixed together?
SAE (inch) and metric threads have different pitch profiles that don't reliably mesh even at similar nominal diameters, and forcing a mismatched thread can damage both the fastener and the mating part. Keep SAE and metric assortments in clearly separated, labeled bins rather than mixed together, and verify with a thread gauge if there's any doubt.
What's the benefit of a labeled cabinet assortment over a single mixed bag of fasteners?
A labeled, sorted cabinet lets you find the right size and grade quickly and shows at a glance when a specific size is running low, versus a mixed bag where every search means sorting through everything and running out of one size isn't obvious until you're already mid-repair.
Do fastener assortments come in stainless steel, or just standard plated steel?
Both are available — standard zinc-plated or black oxide assortments suit general indoor use, while stainless steel assortments cost more but resist corrosion in outdoor, washdown, marine, or otherwise corrosive environments where plated steel would eventually rust.
How do I know what fastener types to include in a custom assortment for my shop?
Track what you're most often ordering individually or running out of over a few months, and build (or select) an assortment weighted toward those sizes and types rather than a generic assortment that may be heavy in sizes you rarely use and light in the ones you need most.
