What Is a Truss Nail?

A truss nail is a short, specifically-diametered common or connector nail designed to fasten through the pre-punched holes in metal truss connector plates, joist hangers, hurricane ties and other structural wood-frame connector hardware. Diameter and length are standardized to fit the hole pattern of the connector plate they're paired with — using an undersized nail leaves excess play in the hole that reduces the connection's rated shear capacity, while an oversized nail may not fit the hole at all.

Coating is selected for exposure: hot-dip galvanized nails are required wherever the connector hardware itself is galvanized (the mismatch of an uncoated nail in galvanized hardware creates a galvanic corrosion cell that accelerates rust at the nail), and are mandatory for any truss connection exposed to weather, treated lumber, or high humidity. Structural truss nail specifications and required quantities per connector are typically dictated by the connector hardware manufacturer's published load tables, not by general carpentry nailing schedules.

Why can't I use a regular common nail instead of a specified truss nail?

Connector hardware manufacturers publish specific nail diameter, length and quantity requirements tied to their published load tables — substituting an undersized or wrong-type nail reduces the connection's rated shear and withdrawal capacity below what the structural design assumed, even if the nail appears to physically fit.

When is hot-dip galvanized required instead of bright (uncoated) nails?

Galvanized nails are required whenever the connector hardware itself is galvanized (mixing bare steel nails with galvanized hardware creates galvanic corrosion that attacks the nail), and for any application exposed to weather, moisture or in contact with pressure-treated lumber, which contains corrosive chemical preservatives.

What's the difference between smooth shank and ring shank truss nails?

Ring shank (annular) nails have raised rings along the shank that bite into the wood fibers, significantly increasing resistance to being pulled out under load compared to a smooth shank nail. Ring shank is often specified where higher withdrawal resistance is structurally required.
