What Is a Service Counter?
Service counters are workstation-height fixtures combining a work surface with under-counter storage, used anywhere staff need a transaction, will-call, or service point separate from general workspace. Construction ranges from laminate-topped particleboard or plywood casework, common in retail checkout, to welded steel or stainless steel counters specified in warehouse and industrial settings for durability and, in food or sanitary environments, cleanability.
Modular counter systems let sections (straight runs, corner units, cash-wrap returns) be combined into a configuration matched to the floor plan, and most support add-on components — cash drawer cutouts, keyboard trays, security grilles, and riser shelves — that should be specified up front since retrofitting cutouts into an assembled counter is far harder than ordering it pre-configured.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Work Surface Material | Laminate, stainless steel, solid surface | Stainless suits washdown/food environments; laminate is cost-effective for general retail |
| Counter Height | Standard 36-42in transaction height | Should match ADA accessible-counter requirements where a public-facing lower section is required |
| Configuration | Straight run, L-shape, modular sections | Modular sections allow reconfiguration as floor plan or throughput needs change |
| Storage/Shelving | Open shelving, locking cabinets, drawers | Determines what can be securely stored at the point of service versus in back-of-house |
| Frame Material | Steel, wood/laminate composite | Steel-framed counters suit higher-traffic or industrial environments needing more durability |

FAQ
Service Counters Questions, Answered
What work surface material should I choose?
Laminate is the most cost-effective choice for general retail and office counters; stainless steel is specified where washdown, sanitation, or heavy industrial wear resistance is needed; solid surface offers a premium, seamless appearance for higher-end retail environments.
How tall should a service counter be?
Standard transaction counter height is 36-42 inches, but check ADA requirements if the counter serves the public — many jurisdictions require at least a portion of the counter at a lower, accessible height (typically 36 inches or less with knee clearance).
Can counter sections be reconfigured later?
Modular counter systems built from standard sections (straight runs, corners, returns) can typically be rearranged or added to as floor plan needs change, which isn't possible with a single custom-built one-piece counter.
Should I order cutouts pre-installed or add them later?
Order cutouts (cash drawer, keyboard tray, monitor pass-through) as part of the initial order whenever possible — retrofitting a cutout into an assembled laminate or steel counter is significantly more difficult and can compromise the surface's finish or structural integrity.
What storage options are available under a service counter?
Options range from open shelving for quick-access items to locking cabinets and drawers for cash, documents or valuables — specify based on what needs to be secured at the point of service versus stored elsewhere.
