What Is a Door Drip Edge?
A door drip edge (drip cap) is a formed metal or vinyl flashing installed at the head of an exterior door or window opening, projecting outward and downward to shed water away from the top of the frame before it can run behind the trim and into the wall assembly. Without it, water sheeting down a wall surface wicks behind the head casing by capillary action, leading to rot, mold, and eventual structural damage around the opening — a failure mode building codes address by requiring flashing at all exterior door and window heads.
Profile depth and the presence of a hemmed drip edge (a folded-back lip on the leading edge) determine how effectively water is thrown clear of the wall rather than dripping straight down against it. Aluminum is the most common material for its corrosion resistance and ease of field-cutting to width, while pre-finished vinyl or PVC options are used to match trim color without painting. What's the difference between aluminum and vinyl drip edges?
Aluminum drip caps are typically mill-finished or painted, are easy to field-cut and bend to width, and resist corrosion well, making them the most common choice for new construction and remodeling. Vinyl or PVC drip edges are used mainly to color-match existing PVC or vinyl trim without a separate painting step, but they're less commonly stocked in the wide range of profile depths available in aluminum.
How do I determine the right length for a door drip edge?
Measure the door's rough opening width and select or cut the drip edge to match or slightly exceed that width, ensuring the flashing extends past the jambs on both sides so water can't bypass it at the corners. Most drip edge is sold in stock lengths (often 6' to 10') and field-cut to the exact opening width during installation.
What does 'hemmed' mean on a drip edge, and does it matter?
A hemmed drip edge has its leading (outer) edge folded back on itself, forming a small lip that forces water to drop cleanly off the edge rather than running back underneath the flashing and along the wall surface (a phenomenon called capillary creep). This hem is a meaningful functional detail, not just a finishing touch, and is generally preferred over a plain-cut edge in higher-exposure applications.
Can drip edge flashing be installed on an existing door without removing the trim?
In many retrofit cases, a drip cap can be slid up under the existing head casing or building paper without full trim removal, provided there's enough clearance and the existing flashing (if any) is removed or the new piece is properly lapped over it.
