Technical Foundation

What Is a Well Pump Accessorie?

Well pump accessories are the fittings, controls, and hardware needed to install and operate a submersible or jet pump system, beyond the pump itself. A pitless adapter is a fitting mounted through the well casing wall below the frost line that allows the water line to exit the casing without needing an accessible connection at the surface — this keeps the system frost-protected and sanitary-sealed year-round, and is required by code in most jurisdictions with buried well casings.

A torque arrestor is a rubber-finned device attached near the pump that presses against the casing wall to absorb the rotational torque generated at pump start-up, preventing the drop pipe and wiring from twisting and abrading against the casing over repeated cycles. Pressure tanks store a reserve of pressurized water using a captive air bladder, reducing pump cycling frequency — tank size and pre-charge pressure must be matched to the pump's flow rate and the system's pressure switch settings to avoid short-cycling, which shortens pump motor life.

FAQ

Well Pump Accessories Questions, Answered

What does a pitless adapter do and why is it required?

A pitless adapter is a fitting installed through the well casing wall below the frost line, allowing the water supply line to exit the well and run underground to the house without any connection point exposed at the surface. This keeps the well sanitary-sealed and prevents the water line from freezing, and most state and local well codes require one on any buried-casing well installation.

What is a torque arrestor and do I need one?

A torque arrestor is a rubber-finned collar installed just above the pump motor that grips the inside of the well casing to absorb the rotational torque produced when the pump motor starts. Without it, repeated start-up torque can twist the drop pipe and abrade the electrical cable against the casing wall over time, so it's considered standard practice on nearly all submersible pump installations, especially with plastic drop pipe.

How do I size a pressure tank for my well pump?

Pressure tank size is based on the pump's flow rate (GPM) and the pressure switch's cut-in/cut-out settings — the tank needs enough usable drawdown capacity to prevent the pump from short-cycling (starting and stopping too frequently), which is a leading cause of premature pump motor failure. As a rule of thumb, larger flow-rate pumps need proportionally larger tanks; a pump supplier's sizing chart should confirm the exact tank size for your pump's rated GPM.

What's the difference between a 2-wire and 3-wire submersible pump?

A 2-wire submersible pump has its start and run capacitors built into the motor itself, so it connects directly to power with no separate control box. A 3-wire pump has the start/run capacitors housed in an above-ground control box instead of the motor, which makes the motor simpler and cheaper to replace but requires the control box to be correctly matched to the pump's horsepower and installed and wired correctly.

How do I size submersible pump wire correctly?

Submersible pump wire must be sized based on both the pump's amperage draw and the total length of the drop cable run, because voltage drop increases with cable length — a wire gauge that's fine for a shallow well may be undersized for a deep one. Undersized wire causes a voltage drop at the pump that reduces performance and can shorten motor life, so always check a voltage-drop sizing chart against your specific depth and pump amperage rather than guessing.
