What Is a U-Bolt?
A U-bolt is a fastener bent into a U shape with threaded ends, used to clamp round pipe, tube or shaft stock, or square/rectangular tubing, against a flat mounting surface or bracket, secured by nuts (and often a backing/mounting plate) threaded onto the exposed ends. Round bend U-bolts follow the curvature of round pipe or round stock and are the standard for pipe hangers, mounting brackets and general clamping; square bend U-bolts have flat, angled sides matching square or rectangular tube profiles, common in suspension and structural mounting applications where the clamped member is not round.
Sizing specifies the inside dimension (the diameter or width/height the U-bolt is bent to fit around), thread size and length of the threaded legs, and overall leg spacing, all of which must match the actual pipe/tube outer dimension and the mounting bracket's bolt-hole spacing — a U-bolt bent to the wrong inside dimension will either not fit around the pipe or clamp with a loose, ineffective grip. Material selection (zinc-plated or hot-dip galvanized carbon steel for general and outdoor use, stainless steel for corrosive or marine environments) should match the exposure environment, not just the mounting structure's material.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bend Style | Round bend (for round pipe/stock) vs. square bend (for square/rectangular tube) | Must match the cross-sectional profile of the item being clamped — a round bend won't seat flush against square tubing |
| Inside Dimension | Diameter (round) or width/height (square) the U-bolt is bent to | Must match the actual outer dimension of the pipe or tube being clamped for a snug, effective grip |
| Thread Size & Leg Length | Diameter and pitch of the threaded ends; length available for nuts/plate | Must provide enough thread engagement and clearance for the nuts and any mounting plate or bracket thickness |
| Material & Finish | Zinc-plated steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, stainless steel | Determines corrosion resistance — outdoor, marine or washdown applications need galvanized or stainless, not plain plated steel |
| Grade/Tensile Strength | Material grade determining load and clamping capacity | Structural and suspension applications require a specific minimum grade to safely carry the intended load |

FAQ
U-Bolts Questions, Answered
How do I determine the right U-bolt size for my pipe?
Measure the actual outer diameter of the pipe or tube being clamped — the U-bolt's inside dimension should match that measurement closely for a snug fit; too large and the clamp won't grip securely, too small and it won't fit around the pipe at all. Also confirm the thread size and leg length provide enough engagement for the nuts plus any mounting plate thickness in the assembly.
What's the difference between round bend and square bend U-bolts?
Round bend U-bolts are curved to match a round pipe, tube or shaft profile and seat flush against curved surfaces. Square bend U-bolts have flat sides bent at right angles to match square or rectangular tubing — using a round bend U-bolt on square tubing leaves gaps at the corners and an insecure, uneven clamp, so the bend style must match the actual cross-section of what's being clamped.
Should I choose galvanized or stainless steel U-bolts?
Hot-dip galvanized steel provides good corrosion resistance for general outdoor and structural use at a lower cost than stainless. Stainless steel is specified for marine, coastal, washdown or chemical-exposure environments where galvanized coating could eventually wear through or where the appearance and long-term corrosion resistance of stainless is worth the added cost.
What torque should I use when tightening U-bolt nuts?
Torque values depend on the U-bolt's thread size, material grade and the application — over-tightening can crush or deform thin-wall tubing, or exceed the bolt's yield strength, while under-tightening risks the clamp loosening under vibration. For structural or suspension applications with a specified torque value (such as leaf-spring U-bolts on vehicle axles), always follow the equipment manufacturer's torque spec rather than a generic guideline.
Can U-bolts be used for structural load-bearing applications?
Yes, when sized and graded appropriately for the load — U-bolts are commonly used in genuinely load-bearing roles like suspension leaf-spring clamping and pipe support systems, but the specific grade/tensile strength needed depends on the actual load and safety factor required, which should be verified against the U-bolt's rated capacity rather than assumed from its size alone.
