What Is a Sealing & Cushioning Washer?
A sealing washer creates a compressible barrier under a fastener head or nut that seals out water and air at the penetration point — critical anywhere a screw or bolt passes through a roof, panel or enclosure wall exposed to weather. Bonded sealing washers combine a metal backing washer with a molded rubber seal permanently bonded to it, giving the load-spreading and pull-through resistance of a metal washer with the sealing performance of rubber in one part, versus a standalone elastomer washer that seals but offers less resistance to crushing under high torque.
Material selection depends on the environment: neoprene offers good general weather and ozone resistance at moderate cost; EPDM offers superior UV and outdoor weathering resistance, making it the standard for roofing and long-term outdoor exposure; silicone extends the usable temperature range for hot or cold service where neoprene and EPDM would harden or lose sealing force. Cushioning washers (without a sealing function) use the same materials primarily for vibration damping and to protect a surface finish from fastener head marring, rather than to exclude moisture.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Standalone elastomer vs. metal-bonded sealing washer | Bonded washers resist crushing/pull-through better under higher fastener torque |
| Elastomer Material | Neoprene, EPDM, silicone, rubber | Determines weathering, UV, temperature and chemical resistance in service |
| Bore/Fastener Size | Sized to match the specific screw/bolt diameter | Undersized bore reduces sealing contact area; oversized allows leak paths |
| Temperature Range | Typically -40°F to 250°F, higher for silicone | Must cover the actual service temperature extremes at the installation point |
| Backing Material (bonded types) | Galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum | Determines corrosion resistance and compatibility with the substrate metal |

FAQ
Sealing & Cushioning Washers Questions, Answered
What's the difference between a bonded sealing washer and a standalone rubber washer?
A bonded sealing washer permanently molds a rubber seal to a metal backing washer, combining load-spreading and pull-through resistance with sealing performance in one part — the standard for roofing and structural fastener sealing. A standalone rubber washer seals on its own but compresses and can crush or extrude under higher fastener torque without a metal backer.
Should I choose neoprene, EPDM or silicone?
EPDM offers the best UV and long-term outdoor weathering resistance and is the standard for roofing. Neoprene is a good general-purpose, moderate-cost option for less demanding outdoor exposure. Silicone extends usable temperature range furthest for hot or cold service where the other two would harden or lose sealing force.
How do I size a sealing washer correctly?
Match the washer's bore diameter to the fastener's shank diameter — too large a bore reduces the sealing contact area and can create a leak path around the fastener; too small won't fit over the shank at all. Confirm the outer diameter also matches the mounting hole clearance in the substrate.
Can sealing washers be reused after removal?
Generally not recommended for critical weathertight applications — compressed elastomer takes a permanent set after initial torque-down, and reused washers may not re-seal as effectively. Replace with new washers whenever a sealed fastener is removed and reinstalled.
What temperature range can these washers handle?
Standard neoprene and EPDM washers typically handle roughly -40°F to 250°F; silicone extends usefully beyond that range on the high end. Confirm the specific product's rated range against the actual service temperature at the installation point, including sun-exposed surface temperatures which run well above ambient.
