What Is a Bonnets and Pad?
Floor machine bonnets and pads are consumable attachments used with rotary buffers, low-speed scrubbers and high-speed burnishers to clean, strip, scrub or polish flooring. Carpet bonnets are absorbent, typically cotton or microfiber-faced circular pads used for low-moisture 'bonnet cleaning' — a light interim carpet cleaning method that absorbs surface soil into the bonnet fabric rather than deep-extracting it, faster and less disruptive than hot water extraction but not a substitute for periodic deep cleaning.
Hard floor pads follow a standardized color-coding system based on synthetic fiber density and abrasiveness — black pads are the most aggressive, used for stripping old finish; red and blue pads are progressively less aggressive, used for spray buffing and light scrubbing; white pads are the least aggressive, used for polishing; and high-speed burnishing pads (often tan, green or natural hair blends) are designed specifically for use at 1,000+ RPM to bring floor finish to a high gloss without removing it. Using an overly aggressive pad for a light task wears down finish unnecessarily; using too mild a pad for stripping wastes time and chemical.

| Spec | What It Means | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pad Color/Aggressiveness | Black (most aggressive) through white (least) | Standardized industry color code — matching pad aggressiveness to the task avoids finish damage or wasted effort |
| Fiber Type | Cotton, microfiber, synthetic polyester blend | Determines absorbency (bonnets) or abrasive characteristics (hard floor pads) |
| Machine Diameter | Matched to rotary machine size, e.g. 17", 19", 20", 21" | Pad must match the machine's pad driver/holder diameter exactly for proper attachment and balance |
| Speed Rating | Low-speed (175-350 RPM) vs. high-speed burnishing (1,000+ RPM) | Standard pads are not rated for burnisher speeds; using the wrong pad at high RPM risks pad failure and poor results |
| Application | Bonnet cleaning, stripping, scrubbing, buffing, burnishing | Each task requires a specifically designed pad — a stripping pad and a burnishing pad are not interchangeable |

FAQ
Bonnets and Pads Questions, Answered
What does the color-coding system on floor pads mean?
Floor pad color generally indicates abrasiveness/aggressiveness from most to least: black pads are the most aggressive, used for stripping old finish; green and blue pads are moderately aggressive, used for scrubbing; red pads are light-duty, used for spray buffing and daily maintenance; white pads are the least aggressive, used for polishing without removing finish. This color system is a widely followed industry convention, though it's worth confirming with the specific manufacturer since exact aggressiveness can vary slightly between brands.
What is bonnet cleaning and when is it appropriate for carpet?
Bonnet cleaning uses an absorbent pad attached to a rotary floor machine, lightly dampened with cleaning solution, to absorb surface-level soil from carpet through friction and absorption rather than deep extraction. It's a fast, low-moisture interim cleaning method suited to routine maintenance of commercial carpet between scheduled deep cleanings, but it doesn't remove soil trapped deep in the carpet pile the way hot water extraction does, so it isn't a substitute for periodic deep cleaning.
Can I use a standard buffing pad on a high-speed burnisher?
No — standard low-speed pads (rated for roughly 175-350 RPM) aren't designed for the much higher rotational speeds of a burnisher (often 1,000-3,000+ RPM) and can fail, overheat, or produce poor results at that speed. Burnishing pads are specifically constructed with different fiber blends and backing to withstand high-speed use and produce a high-gloss finish without removing the underlying floor finish.
How do I know what size pad my floor machine needs?
Pad diameter must match your specific floor machine's pad driver or holder size exactly — common sizes include 17", 19", 20" and 21", among others — an undersized pad won't seat correctly on the driver and an oversized one won't fit or will run unbalanced. Check your machine's specifications or the pad driver itself rather than assuming a standard size.
How often should carpet bonnets and hard floor pads be replaced or cleaned?
Carpet bonnets should be laundered or replaced once visibly soiled since a dirty bonnet redistributes soil back onto the carpet rather than removing it. Hard floor pads wear down with use and lose their designed texture and effectiveness over time — most facilities replace pads on a set schedule based on usage volume rather than waiting for visible failure, since a worn pad produces inconsistent results even before it looks obviously damaged.
